Warning: This article contains spoilers for episode 4 of Masamune-kun's Revenge R, titled "I'm Not Going to Fall In Love With You, Pig's Foot", currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
In episode 3, we discussed the significance of the lies and deceptions woven by Gasou Kanetsugu and Yoshino Koiwai, character traits that have played a crucial role in the development of the story thus far. Ultimately, these lies serve as the driving force behind the actions of our main characters, particularly Makabe Masamune.
Expectation Is The Mother Of All Disappointment
In the subsequent episode, episode 4, we are presented with a more profound and more comprehensible insight into the root of the conflicts. This means that we discover another vital component of the puzzle that will provide a better understanding of the overall story of Masamune-kun's Revenge. It serves as an additional element that contributes to the plot of this Romantic Comedy series, specifically focusing on the management of expectations.
In Episode 4, a long-held secret of Yoshino's finally comes to light. Surprisingly, it is revealed that she was the one who both rejected and ridiculed Masamune on that fateful night. This revelation hits Yoshino like a terrible shock, as she had dedicated her entire life to pleasing Adagaki Aki. However, despite all her efforts to cater to Aki's desires, Masamune was the one who held a special place in Aki's heart, as she confessed to enjoying their time together. Not once did Aki mention Yoshino's name, adding further disappointment to her already shattered expectations.
Yoshino was hoping for Aki to recognize her efforts, but when Aki didn't, Yoshino felt angry and let down. That night, when Yoshino heard Masamune calling out Aki's name, she pretended to be Aki and angrily confronted clueless Masamune.
Meanwhile, Masamune came to meet Aki in the middle of the night, hoping for her affection in return. However, he was met with insults and ridicule instead. His expectations shattered, and he eventually grew to despise Aki.
Expectation, Lies, Misunderstanding
On the contrary, during her toughest moments, Aki had anticipated that Masamune would be by her side. However, he abruptly vanished without uttering a single word. Day after day, she eagerly awaited his return, but he never reappeared. Gradually, her anticipation transformed into a soul-crushing letdown. Consequently, due to this agonizing ordeal, Aki developed an icy disposition that dismisses any man brave enough to approach her. They all possess specific expectations, and all of them face inevitable disappointment.
Thanks to this episode, we now have the foundational elements of Masamune-kun's Revenge: anticipation, falsehoods, and misinterpretation. It all began with unfulfilled expectations morphing into a web of lies and deceit, which eventually led to a profound misunderstanding. As time elapsed, this misunderstanding grew into a traumatic ordeal, profoundly shaping the characters' perspectives on life and making it increasingly difficult for the deceivers to confess their wrongdoing to the victim.
Masamune-kun’s Revenge incorporated various comedic elements, supporting characters, love interests, and fan service to enhance its vibrancy. However, at its core, the series revolves around themes of expectations, lies, and misunderstandings. These supplementary aspects serve to bolster the main storyline, providing a simple yet effective approach to a romantic comedy narrative that captivates viewers and takes them on an enjoyable roller coaster ride.
Nonetheless, the simplicity of the story also presents a drawback. A story built on lies and misunderstandings can only be sustained for a limited time before the truth must be revealed to propel the plot forward. Otherwise, the audience may become bored and lose interest, growing frustrated at the characters' inability to uncover the obvious lies right in front of them. Based on what we've seen in episode 4, it appears that the conclusion is nearing.
End So Soon?
In the first episode of Masamune-kun's Revenge R, Masamune discussed the importance of keeping the audience in suspense in a romantic comedy. The moment when the main characters finally come together signifies that a significant portion of the story has been completed, roughly around 80%. It is intriguing to note that episode 4 hints at the long-awaited moment when the lies will be uncovered.
After hearing the truth from Yoshino, Masamune realizes that his pain and animosity stem from a mere misunderstanding. Determined to address this, he plans to confront Aki and reveal everything. Consequently, the resolution is now within reach. Though there may be some further delay as the characters work to settle matters, it appears that the series is approaching its conclusion sooner rather than later.
Supposedly, that is the case. Masamune-kun’s Revenge's inaugural season includes 12 episodes, leading us to anticipate a comparable number of episodes for this installment. Therefore, it is rather unexpected that this disclosure arises in episode 4. Considering that there are approximately 8 more episodes remaining, why unveil this crucial information now? Does it imply that the narrative will be prolonged beyond its intended conclusion? Might there still be undisclosed secrets? To acquire answers, one must persist in watching new episodes on a weekly basis.
