In Layers of Fear (2023), players will embark on the Actor's Story and immediately be tasked with finding the flashlight in the first chapter. This essential tool not only illuminates the Actor's path and provides a clearer view of the surroundings throughout the story but also serves as a means of defense and utility. Given the relentless pursuit of the main echo, which exhibits remarkable aggression and the ability to break through doors, acquiring and mastering the use of the flashlight becomes crucial for players.

Where to Get the Flashlight in Layers of Fear

Upon completing the pirate ship stage in Layers of Fear (2023), players will be directed to follow the chalk arrows on the floor leading to a hallway. As they approach the curtain in the hallway, the colors in the game gradually fade away. Behind the curtain, a table on the left holds a narrative letter from a carpentry company, detailing a wooden box that is large enough to accommodate a grown man. On the right, a radio sits on a stool and can be switched off by players.

As players venture further into the room, they will notice a chalkboard on the left side. This chalkboard bears a striking resemblance to the one found in the Actor's cabin. Interestingly, when flipped over, it displays the message 'Be ready to go back,' serving as a subtle hint for players to turn around and retrace their steps.

Upon opening the door that previously led to a fully set stage, players will discover that it now leads to a compact room. The walls of this room are adorned with metal shelves, while a table is adorned with film reels. At the far end of the room, a suitcase catches the eye. As players approach the table, the suitcase will mysteriously open, revealing a flashlight. Players can interact with the flashlight in order to pick it up.

How to Use the Flashlight in Layers of Fear

Throughout the story, the flashlight serves as the Actor's primary defense, similar to the lantern in the Painter's Story. It can be used to dispel the aggressive echo that appears more frequently in the Actor's Story. However, players need to be cautious not to overuse the flashlight and leave themselves vulnerable to attacks.

Additionally, the flashlight can be focused on specific mannequins to make them move, revealing hidden pathways or collectible items like keys. There are several instances in the game where players must juggle defending themselves from the echo while using the flashlight strategically to manipulate the mannequins and create an escape route. It is important to keep an eye on the meter displayed on the player HUD to ensure the flashlight does not run out of power at critical moments.
