Bucky asking Buck to be his best man may sound like a made-up story in the world of the Masters of the Air, but John Egan actually served as the best man at Buck Cleven's wedding. Both Cleven and Egan were captured as POWs and spent 15 months together at Stalag Luft III. In January 1945, they were moved to a new camp where Egan remained in captivity for four more months while Cleven managed to escape. Luckily, by the spring of 1945, both men made it back to the safety of the United States and their friendship endured.

Buck Cleven got married to Marjorie in July 1945, with John Egan serving as his best man. Egan also tied the knot in 1945, marrying Josephine Pitz, a WASP pilot. It is not known if Cleven attended Egan's wedding. Both men served in the Korean War and later pursued their education. Unfortunately, Egan passed away in 1961 due to a heart attack. Tragically, Cleven's first wife Marge died of polio in 1953. He remarried in 1955 and went on to serve in the Vietnam War. After a brief stint at the Pentagon, Cleven passed away in 2006.

Gale Cleven earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and a doctorate in physics.

After Egan's promise to be Cleven's best man in Masters of the Air, it's only fitting that the series should feature the actual wedding. Even though it would be a departure from the high-flying action scenes we're used to, seeing Cleven and Egan tie the knot would be a heartwarming moment. After all they've been through together, it would be a satisfying conclusion to see them safe and happy. While it's not essential to show Cleven's wedding, including it would definitely add to the emotional impact of the series' ending.
