Unveiling the Real Culprit Behind Blue Beetle's Lackluster Box Office Weekend

Warner Bros partly attributes the lackluster box office opening of the Blue Beetle movie to an unexpected factor, offering insight into the film's underperformance

Highlights

Blue Beetle's theatrical debut falls short of box office projections, leading Warner Bros Discovery to blame Tropical Storm Hilary for the film's underperformance.

The storm is anticipated to have a significant impact, especially among the film's enthusiasts in Southern California.

Although Blue Beetle has received positive feedback from both audiences and critics, its opening box office numbers rank as one of the lowest among DC films, indicating a continued lack of interest from fans towards DCEU projects.

Warner Bros. Discovery has issued a statement placing blame for the underperformance of Blue Beetle's theatrical debut squarely on one party. The film, based on the character from DC Comics, tells the story of Jaime Reyes, a recent graduate of Gotham Law University who becomes connected to a powerful alien Scarab after getting caught up in a conflict between Victoria Kord and her niece Jenny over the Scarab's role in Victoria's "One Man Army Corps" program. Originally intended for a release on HBO Max, the project was later elevated to a 2023 theatrical release for Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle's financial success following a series of box-office failures for Warner Bros. Discovery appears unlikely. The film's performance in its first weekend fell below already conservative expectations, and Warner Bros. has attributed this to Tropical Storm Hilary. According to the Exhibitor Relations Co.'s Twitter account, the storm's significant impact, particularly in Southern California where the film is performing well, is to blame. Tropical Storm Hilary, which is the first of its kind to hit the region in nearly a century, has caused heavy rain, flooding, and mudslides in Los Angeles, which is Blue Beetle's primary market. Despite Warner Bros.' explanation, the statement has been met with skepticism and amusement, as many had already predicted Blue Beetle to be another box-office failure for Warner Bros. Discovery.

Blue Beetle should have taken note of the lack of fan enthusiasm towards recent DCEU projects. Unfortunately, the film has now debuted with the lowest box office opening for any DC film, apart from Wonder Woman 1984. This is even lower than the opening for The Suicide Squad, which also premiered simultaneously in theaters and on streaming platforms. Despite this disappointment, it is worth mentioning that Blue Beetle has garnered positive feedback from both audiences and critics. There is still a glimmer of hope for the future of the film within James Gunn's DCU. Gunn himself has expressed interest in incorporating the Blue Beetle character into his universe, and the film's director, Angel Manuel Soto, has prepared plans for further development if given the opportunity. Whether or not the film's box office performance will impede its continuation remains uncertain, but it is clear that many are rooting for its success.
