We are currently seeking a Senior Machine Gameplay Designer to actively participate in the creation of innovative machines for our game. The Horizon franchise has gained recognition and acclaim for its exceptional presentation, immersive combat, captivating storytelling, and exhilarating exploration.
The next installment in the Horizon series is expected to feature a greater variety of machines, as indicated by a recent job posting at Guerrilla Games. The highly anticipated sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, was announced earlier this year.
Initially introduced in 2017 with the release of Horizon Zero Dawn, the Horizon franchise has attained significant popularity and impressive sales figures. This success led to the creation of Horizon Forbidden West, scheduled for release in 2022. The series revolves around the adventures of Aloy, a young huntress navigating post-apocalyptic landscapes in a reimagined version of the western United States, while combating formidable machines that have conquered the region. Both games have received critical acclaim for their immersive graphics, engaging combat, gripping narrative, well-developed characters, and expansive exploration. The immense triumph of these titles has already motivated the developers to plan a trilogy.
According to a job listing on the official Guerrilla Games site, they are currently seeking a Senior Machine Gameplay Designer. The hired candidate will play a crucial role in the development of new Horizon machines for the next installment of the game. This includes working on the designs from the concept artwork stage all the way to the final polishing of in-game assets before the game is completed.
It is essential for the selected individual to possess strong teamwork skills, as well as a highly creative and detail-oriented mindset. Additionally, experience in various forms of art design, ranging from sketches to 3D modeling, is required.
Applicants must possess a minimum of five years of experience in game or combat design, with expertise in the Unreal and Unity engines. Proficiency in writing design documents is also required. While not mandatory, experience in level design and combat encounter design is considered advantageous. The decision to focus on only one melee weapon in the Horizon series suggests a potential revamp of the combat system in the upcoming third game. Guerrilla Games emphasizes that the position will primarily be on-site in Amsterdam, and they will provide support for visa, immigration, permit, and relocation for eligible candidates.
The Horizon duology has garnered a dedicated fanbase for various reasons. Judging from the successful global ad campaigns done for the franchise, it is evident that the machines are highly regarded. This explains the need for a designer to create new machines. However, only time will reveal the appearance and functionality of these new designs in combat.
