Released in 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn quickly became one of PlayStation's most successful single-player IPs in recent years, despite being overshadowed by Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Despite some setbacks with Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West continues to be highly regarded as one of the best games on the PS5. Where there is success, there is always a desire for more, and Guerrilla Games clearly shares that desire.
As of May 2022, Horizon Forbidden West reportedly sold 8.4 million copies, bringing the total franchise sales to an impressive 32.7 million units. This achievement is particularly significant for a relatively new IP, and it is only natural that Sony and Guerrilla Games want to capitalize on this opportunity. Recently, Guerrilla Games revealed that they have 16 plans in the works for the Horizon franchise, some of which have already been confirmed, while most are still under wraps.
What Some of The Horizon Franchise's 16 'Plans' Could Be
Sony has spent the past decade assembling its own exclusive lineup of games, and it's no surprise that the Horizon franchise is leading the way. With such a vast and limitless universe, Guerrilla Games intends to continue expanding it with new stories. This is where their 16 plans come into play.
During a recent Develop: Brighton talk, Jan-Bart van Beek, the studio director at Guerrilla Games, discussed the future of the Horizon franchise and revealed some of their plans. He mentioned the possibility of a multiplayer game set in the Horizon universe. According to Beek, this co-op venture will be a "massive shift" for the studio, similar in scope to the first Horizon game. Guerrilla Games initially hinted at a Horizon multiplayer game in December 2022, but no further details or release dates have been announced yet.
There is currently an ongoing project within the Horizon franchise for a Netflix show. It may be titled Horizon 2074 or Horizon Zero Dawn. Limited official information is available at this time, but if the leaked title is accurate, it could serve as a prequel to the game series and explore the story of Elisabet Sobeck and the Zero Dawn project. The show will have Steve Blackman from The Umbrella Academy as the showrunner and Michelle Lovretta as the main series writer. Production dates have not been announced, but considering the ongoing strikes in Hollywood, it appears that the show is still far from completion.
Apart from this, there are several other potential projects in the works for the Horizon franchise. The most obvious one is a mainline sequel to Horizon Forbidden West. Given the way the game ends and the Burning Shores DLC, it is evident that there is more to Aloy's story, and Guerrilla Games is likely in the early stages of planning at least one, if not multiple, sequels. Another potential project could be a sequel to Horizon: Call of the Mountain, the PlayStation VR2 spin-off. While the reception to Call of the Mountain was mixed, it still presented a decent VR experience. With improvements to the existing foundations, a sequel could potentially become the standout title that the PSVR2 platform currently lacks.
Horizon Forbidden West is available now for PS4 and PS5.
