The live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho has now made its debut on Netflix, attracting a new wave of fans to the Japanese drama series who may be unfamiliar with the main characters. Among these characters is Botan, which we will now explore in detail.

Following the success of One Piece's adaptation, Netflix appears to be moving forward with their anime adaptations. Initially, fans were skeptical when they learned that the popular 90s animanga Yu Yu Hakusho was being adapted by the streaming giant.

Upon the release of the trailer before the series premiere, we recognized the potential of Yu Yu Hakusho's live-action adaptation. Now that it's here, it's clear that the adaptation has exceeded expectations. It's a departure from the past when anime live-action projects, such as Cowboy Bebop and Death Note, were associated with disappointment. The live-action version of Yu Yu Hakusho has successfully brought its characters to life, with Botan playing a particularly important role in the story.

Who is Botan in Yu Yu Hakusho?

Botan serves as a grim reaper, acting as a guide responsible for escorting departed souls to Koenma, the arbiter of who goes to heaven and who is consigned to hell.

I don't care what some people say, I really like this version of Botan. She has grown on me and she's so cute and funny. My only complaint is that I wish she had the broom! I really want to see the broom at least once. #幽遊白書 #Yuyuhakusho #YYHLA #YuyuhakushoLiveAction https://t.co/uYzRZYDHP0

Botan played a crucial role in helping Yusuke pass the test administered by Koenma to become a spirit detective. From the beginning, Botan has been a valuable ally to Yusuke, also aiding Keiko on multiple occasions. When Hiei attempted to turn Keiko into a demon, Botan intervened, using her abilities to conceal the process and save her life.

Moreover, Botan provided moral support to Yusuke and Kuwabara during their rigorous training with Genkai. Whenever Yusuke found himself in a difficult situation, Botan always came to his rescue, no matter how challenging the circumstances.

Who plays Botan in Yu Yu Hakusho live-action?

The role of Botan is portrayed by 27-year-old actress Kotone Furukawa, known for her performances in the 2021 film 'Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy' and the TV show 'Pending Train' released in 2023.

Furukawa made her first film appearance in 2019, while her TV debut was seen in Yell, an NHK TV drama released in 2020.

Editor's P/S

As a hard fan of Yu Yu Hakusho, I was initially skeptical about the live-action adaptation on Netflix. However, after watching the series, I am pleasantly surprised by how well-made it is. The characters are portrayed accurately, and the story stays true to the original manga. Botan, in particular, is one of my favorite characters, and I think the actress Kotone Furukawa does an excellent job of bringing her to life. She perfectly captures Botan's quirky personality and her unwavering loyalty to Yusuke.

One thing I particularly appreciate about the live-action adaptation is how it expands on Botan's character. In the original manga, Botan is mostly a supporting character, but in the live-action series, she is given more depth and development. We learn more about her backstory and her motivations, which makes her a more well-rounded and relatable character. Overall, I am very happy with the live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho and highly recommend it to fans of the original manga and anime.
