Jujutsu Kaisen is known for its dark Shonen theme and high death toll – here's a comprehensive list of the 37 character deaths. Set in a world where negative emotions spawn cursed spirits that endanger people, the series follows Jujutsu sorcerers as they confront these curses and train young students to do the same, in a world where danger is ever-present.
The battle against curses is endless, persisting as long as humans exist. Compounding the issue are curse users who defy sorcerers, resulting in countless casualties for the Jujutsu society. While the anime is in its second season, the manga is reaching its conclusion with its own share of tragedies. The death toll rises as the sorcerers confront the villains. Below is a list of 35 characters who have passed away in Jujutsu Kaisen. (Note: Major spoilers from the anime and manga are included in this article)
1. Wasuke Itadori
Crunchyroll
2. Tadashi Okazaki
Itador’s grandfather, Wasuke, made his first appearance in the series. He was the first character to pass away in Jujutsu Kaisen. With Yuji’s parents absent, Wasuke took on the role of raising him. Yuji described Wasuke as more of a father figure to him. He ultimately passed away from old age, with his dying wish for Yuji to continue helping others so he wouldn’t feel lonely.
Crunchyroll
Tadashi, a convicted criminal, was serving his sentence at the Eishu Juvenile Detention Center. He had caused the death of a little girl by driving without a license. Furthermore, he was among the few witnesses to the cursed womb transforming in the air. When the curse reached its full power, it took the lives of Tadashi and several other staff members. Despite hearing Tadashi's mother grieving for him, Yuji hoped to rescue him, only to find that Tadashi had already passed away.
3. Nagi Yoshino
Crunchyroll
Nagi, who was Junpei’s mother and his only family, had a different approach to parenting compared to most. Instead of imposing her will on her son, she chose to trust and encourage him, even when she discovered he was skipping school. Tragically, Nagi fell victim to a random cursed spirit, which was actually orchestrated by Mahito in his attempt to manipulate Junpei. The curse found its way into Nagi’s home because of the Sukuna’s finger that Mahito had placed there.
4. Junpei Yoshino
Crunchyroll
Junpei, an ordinary school student, was transformed into a curse user after encountering Mahito. Mahito regarded Junpei as a mere plaything and manipulated him for amusement. Tragically, he even took the life of Junpei's mother in order to push him to the brink. At that point, Yuji, who already knew Junpei, intervened to rescue him. Despite Yuji's efforts, Mahito transformed Junpei into a transfigured human and ultimately killed him in front of Yuji. This heartbreaking event led Yuji to harbor deep resentment towards Mahito until the very end.
5. Kechizu
Crunchyroll
6. Eso
Kechizu, the youngest brother of Choso and Eso, was one of the Death Paintings and possessed the Rot and Decay techniques like his brothers. However, he was considered to be weaker than them. During a battle alongside Eso against Yuji, Nobara, and Megumi, Yuji and Nobara were able to overpower Kechizu, and Nobara’s technique caused the cursed womb to detonate instantly.
Crunchyroll
Eso, the middle brother of Choso and Kechizu, possessed a humanoid form and greater strength than Kechizu. In addition to his Rot and Decay abilities, Eso wielded other techniques. Initially mistaken for cursed spirits, Yuji and Nobara engaged in a battle with the brothers. However, they soon realized their error. Witnessing Eso mourn Kechizu's death left Yuji overwhelmed with guilt, yet he was compelled to fulfill his mission. Ultimately, Yuji aided Nobara in taking down Eso as he attempted to flee.
7. Suguru Geto
Crunchyroll
8. Rika Orimo
Suguru's demise in the prequel movie of Jujutsu Kaisen marked a significant event for fans. Initially portrayed as a formidable antagonist, his character gained immense popularity once his backstory was unveiled. His tragic end left a void in Gojo's life, causing him immense anguish after being betrayed by Suguru. Ultimately, Suguru fell in battle to Yuta, with Gojo delivering the final, fatal blow.
Crunchyroll
Yuta and Rika were childhood friends who made a promise to marry each other when they grew up. Tragically, Rika passed away in a car accident at the young age of eleven. Due to Yuta's strong cursed energy, his refusal to accept Rika's passing caused her to become a special-grade apparition. She remained by Yuta's side for many years until he was finally able to release her from his curse. Even though Rika's soul has moved on, the cursed spirit still lingers with Yuta, providing assistance during battles.
9. Riko Amanai
Crunchyroll
10. Misato Kuroi
Riko, a Star Plasma Vessel, was meant to merge with Master Tengen in order to uphold the barriers. Although Master Tengen's immortality is not flawless, requiring a new vessel every few centuries, many non-sorcerers opposed the idea of "tainting" Master Tengen by using other bodies. Despite the protection of Gojo and Geto, Riko is ultimately murdered by the assassin Toji Fushiguro.
Crunchyroll
Riko had been under the care of Misato Kuroi since she was just four years old, with Misato being the only family she had after her parents passed away. Despite being able to see curses and having some decent skills, Misato was not a combatant and was unable to protect Riko. After Riko's death, Shiu Kong took Misato away. The circumstances of her death were only hinted at and were not confirmed until later in the series.
11. Toji Fushiguro
Crunchyroll
12. Yu Haibara
Toji, a member of the Zenin Clan, was never fully embraced by them due to his lack of cursed energy. Despite this, he proved to be one of the most formidable characters in the series, possessing a body that was restricted by heavenly forces. With his superhuman abilities and heightened senses, Toji was able to overcome even special-grade sorcerers. It was after sustaining fatal injuries from Toji that Gojo utilized the Reverse Cursed Technique for the first time, ultimately bringing an end to the Sorcerer Killer.
Crunchyroll
Yu Haibara, a classmate and junior of Gojo and Geto, was dispatched with Kento Nanami on a mission to eliminate a Grade 2 curse. However, upon arrival, they discovered that the supposed curse was actually a powerful deity of the area, strong enough to be classified as a Grade 1. The inexperienced sorcerers were no match for the deity, leading to Haibara's tragic death. In the aftermath, Gojo intervened to vanquish the powerful curse.
13. Kokichi Muta (Mechamaru)
YouTube
14. Hanami
The death of Kokichi Muta marked the first character to die in the Jujutsu Kaisen Shibuya Incident arc. He collaborated with Mahito and his allies to infiltrate the Jujutsu School in order to acquire a normal body through Idle Transfiguration. Despite possessing immense cursed energy, Kokichi's body was frail due to his heavenly restriction. After successfully obtaining a healthy body, Mahito killed Kokichi shortly before the commencement of the Shibuya Incident.
Crunchyroll
Hanami, an unregistered special-grade cursed spirit, was allied with Jogo, Dagon, and Mahito. Alongside Jogo and Choso, Hanami was tasked with keeping Gojo in one place for twenty minutes so Kenjaku could activate the Prison Realm. However, after witnessing the villains mercilessly slaughter innocent civilians, Gojo became infuriated and swiftly defeated Hanami.
15. Ogami
Crunchyroll
16. Dagon
Ogami had formed an alliance with Kenjaku in order to seal Gojo, as she desired to carry out criminal activities without hindrance. However, her plans were thwarted by Gojo's presence. Ogami possessed the ability to summon the physical or spiritual essence of a deceased individual using their remains. She ultimately met her demise after summoning Toji, whom she was unable to control.
Crunchyroll
Dagon's character had been introduced much earlier in the series, but it was not until the Shibuya Incident arc that he truly matured. Despite the combined efforts of Nanami, Naobito, Maki, and Megumi, they found themselves unable to match Dagon's overwhelming strength. It was only when Toji entered the domain and instinctively took action that Dagon met his end. Toji, lacking any cursed energy, was ignored by Dagon, who ultimately paid the price for underestimating him.
17. Naobito Zenin
Crunchyroll
18. Mimiko Hasaba
Naobito, the formidable sorcerer and leader of the Zenin Clan, bravely fought on the front lines during the Shibuya Incident. His decisive actions played a vital role in the defeat of Dagon, preventing him from levitating and allowing Toji to deliver the final blow. Tragically, after Dagon's domain was sealed, Jogo appeared and attacked the already wounded sorcerers. Despite the valiant efforts of Nanami and Maki, Naobito succumbed to his injuries and passed away a few days later.
Crunchyroll
Suguru took in Mimiko and her twin sister, Nanako, after witnessing the abuse and captivity they endured in their village. In a violent act of vengeance, he eliminated the villagers and brought the sisters under his care. Both Mimiko and Nanako possessed cursed abilities and aided Suguru in his Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. However, when the sisters beseeched Sukuna to eliminate Kenjaku, he callously detonated Mimiko's head in irritation.
19. Nanako Hasaba
Crunchyroll
After witnessing Mimiko's death, Nanako made a futile attempt to attack Sukuna, only to have her head gruesomely severed moments later. Sukuna's irritation towards the sisters stemmed from their belief that they could manipulate him by leveraging their knowledge of the last finger's location and requesting a favor in return. The deaths of these two characters in Jujutsu Kaisen were particularly tragic, as their only intention was to release Geto's body from Kenjaku's control.
20. Jogo
Crunchyroll
Yuji was coerced by Jogo into ingesting ten of Sukuna’s fingers, bringing the total to fifteen. Jogo's intention was to enlist Sukuna on their side, but instead the curse turned on them. Although the confrontation was brief, Sukuna used the opportunity to wreak havoc on a large portion of Shibuya. Following the altercation, Sukuna finally granted Jogo the validation he had been yearning for. Upon hearing Sukuna acknowledge his strength, Jogo wept and drew his final breath.
21. Haruta Shigemo
Crunchyroll
Haruta was a practitioner of dark magic who sided with Kenjaku. After causing chaos during the Sister School Exchange Event, he returned to Shibuya and began targeting sorcerers and their allies. Despite being brutally defeated by Nanami, Haruta managed to survive and sought to eliminate Megumi. However, before he could carry out his plan, Sukuna intervened and unleashed destruction upon Shibuya, ultimately cleaving Haruto in half.
22. Kento Nanami
TOHO
The death of Nanami, a beloved character in Jujutsu Kaisen, was incredibly shocking, especially due to its brutality. After sustaining injuries in Dagon’s domain, Jogo incinerates Nanami’s body. Despite his mortal wounds, he continues to eliminate the transmuted humans in Shibuya until he comes face to face with Mahito. The curse effortlessly detonates Nanami’s upper body, leading to his demise in front of Yuji, further intensifying his trauma and despair.
23. Nobara Kugisaki (unconfirmed)
Crunchyroll
24. Mahito
During the Shibuya Incident Arc, Nobara encounters Mahito and sustains a life-threatening injury. Arata Nitta manages to stop the bleeding and attempts to save her, acknowledging the slim chances of her survival. However, the series has kept her status undisclosed since then, leading fans to speculate that she may have passed away. In chapter 210, Yuji and Megumi discuss their determination not to let Kurusu become a replacement for Nobara, strongly suggesting that she has indeed perished.
Crunchyroll
The demise of Mahito in Jujutsu Kaisen stands out as one of the most gratifying character deaths in the series. As a symbol of pure evil, he reveled in manipulating and tormenting others, even going so far as to take the lives of beloved characters. Ultimately, he met his well-deserved fate at the hands of Yuji, his natural adversary. However, just as Yuji was about to vanquish the cursed spirit, Kenjaku intervened, utilizing Geto's ability to absorb him.
25. Mai Zenin
Crunchyroll
26. Ogi Zenin
The Zenin Clan plotted to eliminate Maki, Mai, and Megumi. Upon arriving at the clan, Maki found Mai already gravely wounded. Unable to match Ogi's strength, Maki and Mai were both thrown into a pit. Facing certain death, Mai used her last bit of energy to fashion a weapon for Maki. With Mai's death, the restrictions on Maki's body were lifted, as they were twins and essentially the same person. In retaliation for Mai's death, Maki annihilated the entire clan.
Viz
Ogi had always believed in his own talent and felt that he was worthy of being the clan head. However, due to the Zenins considering his daughters to be "weak," he was denied the opportunity. This led to Ogi harboring a deep hatred towards his daughters, ultimately resulting in him being willing to take their lives. Despite this, Mai makes the brave decision to sacrifice herself in order to create a powerful sword for Maki. Using this sword, Maki is able to swiftly end Ogi's life by cutting his head in half.

Viz
28. Jinichi Zenin
Chojuro, a member of the Zenin Family and the elite jujutsu sorcerers unit, the Hei, played a minor role in the story. Utilizing his special ability, Earth Arms, he summoned two massive stone arms to attack Maki and restrain her between them. However, Maki easily broke free from the grasp.
Viz
Jinichi, a member of the Zenin Family and its elite unit of jujutsu sorcerers, the Hei, was a minor character. As a Grade 1 sorcerer, he possessed a highly destructive technique that could conjure giant fists propelled by cursed energy like a missile. Despite using Ranta as a distraction, he ultimately failed in his attempt to kill Maki. Maki, showing no mercy, brutally severed his head and threw it in the lake.

Viz
30. Naoya Zenin
Ranta, a minor character and a member of the Zenin Family and its elite unit of jujutsu sorcerers, the Hei, sacrificed himself during Maki’s attack on the clan members. Ranta took his final breath after witnessing Jinichi’s defeat, and passed away with a smile, knowing he had fulfilled his duty.
Viz
Naoya, the youngest son of Naobito Zenin, the head of the clan, believed himself to be the rightful heir of the Zenin Clan due to his exceptional skills. His confrontation with Maki, who defeated him after he attempted to fight her for throwing Jinichi’s head in the water, ended in his eventual demise at the hands of Maki’s mother using an ordinary knife. Instead of being killed by cursed energy, Naoya returned as a vengeful spirit, only to be defeated by Maki and Noritoshi Kamo.
31. Masamichi Yaga
Crunchyroll
32. Yuki Tsukumo
The demise of Yaga in Jujutsu Kaisen came as a shock, considering he was among the few characters introduced early on. Adding to the surprise was the fact that Yaga was killed by Yoshinobu Gakuganji, someone he had a strong bond with. However, Gakuganji was only carrying out orders from higher authorities who took advantage of Gojo's absence and framed Yaga for conspiring with Geto.
Crunchyroll
Yuki, a formidable female character in Jujutsu Kaisen, held the esteemed title of special-grade sorcerer. Her untimely demise was a significant blow to the Jujutsu society. Takaba proved to be one of the most formidable characters in the entire series. However, even his strength was no match for the cunning ancient curse user, Kenjaku. The battle between Takaba and Kenjaku was both intense and comical, but ultimately ended in Takaba's tragic demise. The comedian turned sorcerer had served as a distraction to pave the way for Yuta's surprise attack. Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z netizen, I have mixed feelings about the character deaths in Jujutsu Kaisen. On one hand, I appreciate the author's willingness to take risks and kill off major characters, as it creates a sense of unpredictability and raises the stakes of the story. On the other hand, some of the deaths feel gratuitous and unnecessary, and I would have preferred to see certain characters survive.
Overall, I think the character deaths in Jujutsu Kaisen are a necessary evil. They help to create a sense of danger and urgency, and they force the surviving characters to grow and develop. However, I hope that the author will be more judicious in their use of character deaths in the future, and that they will only kill off characters when it is truly necessary to the story.
