Spider-Man 2 and The Wolverine take place in the same universe, confirmed by the creative director.
In the same universe, there may not be an immediate significant crossover, as the emphasis was on creating a fantastic Spider-Man game while allowing the Wolverine team to excel in their own endeavors, as stated by Bryna Intihar.
The accomplishment of Insomniac's Marvel games has instilled hope in fans for future projects, such as a potential spin-off featuring Venom.
Spider-Man 2's creative director, Bryan Intihar, has confirmed that the game and Insomniac's upcoming title, The Wolverine, share the same universe. Spider-Man 2 has achieved significant success and garnered positive feedback, with record-breaking sales and critical acclaim. As Insomniac works on multiple Marvel character projects, fans have been curious about the potential interactions between the games.
While Wolverine was briefly teased as an Easter egg in Spider-Man 2, there hasn't been much information about the connection between the two games. Although different teams are handling each project internally at Insomniac, the studio's strong track record, particularly on the PS5, has generated excitement among fans for The Wolverine and future installments in the Spider-Man series.
In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Bryan Intihar, the creative director of Spider-Man 2, confirmed that the existing games are set in the same universe as The Wolverine. Intihar jokingly mentioned that both games exist within universe 1048 and playfully added, "I think I got that right." While there is speculation that a detail in Spider-Man 2 might hint at Wolverine's setting, Intihar only stated that the games share the same universe.
According to the creative director's comments, it appears that both games will be set in the same universe. However, there won't be much overlap between them initially. The absence of Wolverine in Spider-Man 2 was a deliberate choice, according to Intihar. He wanted to focus on creating an excellent Spider-Man game while allowing the Wolverine team to work separately.
There are valid reasons, especially in the early stages, to maintain a distinction between Insomniac's Spider-Man and Wolverine series, despite their shared universe. Both characters have distinct tones, and while fans are familiar with Insomniac's versions of Peter and Miles, their portrayal of Logan remains unknown.
Insomniac may have additional Marvel projects in the works. Speculation suggests that Insomniac is developing a third game based on a Marvel Comics property, while the narrative director for Spider-Man 2 hinted at the potential for a Venom spin-off game. Despite no official confirmation yet, as The Wolverine is still a year or two away, fans are eager for Insomniac to explore the opportunity of adapting other beloved comic book characters.
