Electronic Arts introduced Immortals of Aveum during the 2022 Game Awards in December, followed by the release of the official reveal trailer in April. The highly-anticipated game is set to launch in late July, but fans were treated to a sneak peek during the Summer Game Fest main event on June 8. In this fantasy first-person shooter, players take on the role of Jak, a formidable battlemage who possesses the extraordinary ability to harness all three colors of magic.
Jak's powers will prove essential in bringing an end to the long-standing war that has plagued the land of Aveum. Known as the Everwar, this conflict has spanned thousands of years, leaving an indelible mark not only on Aveum's political landscape but also on its physical terrain. The Everwar serves as a crucial backdrop for the game, providing players with a deeper understanding of Immortals of Aveum's immersive setting. Undoubtedly, this intriguing premise will leave fans with a plethora of questions about the Everwar and its significance in the game.
Immortals of Aveum's Everwar
The Wound, an infinitely deep pit located at the center of the world, is surrounded by rifts that stretch along the borders of the kingdoms of Lucium, Oremen, K'Ley, Kalthus, and Rasharn. These rifts are the result of centuries of magical conflict, which have not only claimed countless lives but also left the land distorted and scarred. At the heart of The Wound lies the Pentacade, a mysterious location where the borders of the five kingdoms converge. While EA and Immortals of Aveum developer Ascendant Studios have provided limited information about the Pentacade, its name and significance remain shrouded in secrecy.
Led by the ruthless warlord Sandrakk, Rasharn has established itself as the dominant nation in Immortals of Aveum, controlling the southern region of K'Ley and eastern Kalthus. Despite Lucium's efforts to defend the use of magic and prevent the world from falling into chaos, Sandrakk is determined to achieve complete dominance. With Sandrakk's oppressive rule, it appears that Rasharn is on the verge of victory, as Lucium and its allies struggle to halt the relentless advancement of the Rasharnian forces.
In the world of Immortals of Aveum, the kingdoms rely on a unique blend of magic and technology to engage in battle. A key component of their strategy is the use of skilled magic users known as Magni, who harness their magical abilities through wrist-mounted devices called Sigils. Among these Magni are the renowned Immortals, who serve as Lucium's highly trained special forces.
However, not all participants in the ongoing Everwar possess magical talents. As demonstrated in the latest gameplay trailer of Immortals of Aveum showcased during the Summer Game Fest, the ordinary soldiers from Lucium and Rasharn still wield swords as their primary weapons. Nevertheless, both nations also employ extraordinary machines such as the Rasharnian Airships and a colossal Lucian mech dubbed the Colossus.
Immortals of Aveum launches for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on July 20, 2023.
