How Atwell's Dead Reckoning Character Subverts A Mission: Impossible Tradition
Grace is an intriguing character, consistently displaying an enigmatic and ever-changing nature. Much like a lone wolf, she has become hyper-vigilant and prioritizes her own survival out of sheer necessity. Without any formal training, she has acquired valuable skills through her experiences, making her resourceful and adaptable in unpredictable situations. Interestingly, her background shares similarities with Ethan Hunt, resulting in a fascinating dynamic between them, akin to a cat-and-mouse game or even sibling rivalry. Their constant exasperation with each other adds a touch of endearment and humor to their relationship.
Atwell's hint at an intriguing "cat-and-mouse" dynamic between Ethan and Grace in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One might seem like a familiar trope within the franchise's portrayal of female characters. Ever since the first Mission: Impossible film, the series has often played with the idea of the femme fatale, exemplified by Emmanuelle Béart's Claire who, ultimately, shockingly revealed herself to be a villain in league with her husband, Jim, portrayed by Jon Voight.

Continuing the trend, Mission: Impossible 2 featured Thandiwe Newton's Nyah, showcasing a romantic relationship between her and Ethan rather than solely a survival-based one. However, Mission: Impossible 3 shifted this trend as Ethan began to settle down with Michelle Monaghan's Julia, while also providing guidance to Keri Russell's Lindsey and Maggie Q's Zhen. Although Ethan came out of retirement in the following sequels, this trend continued with Léa Seydoux's character in Ghost Protocol and Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa.
Interestingly, Ilsa has now taken on a more prominent romantic role for Ethan in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, as seen in the trailers where they work together and are shown as a couple. Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie has hinted that their relationship might not last due to the nature of their work, but with Atwell's character Grace described as more of a sibling than a romantic interest, it breaks the franchise's tradition of femme fatales for Ethan to flirt with and provides him with an equal partner to work alongside.
