Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Secret Invasion
Summary
Secret Invasion's explosive reveals set up big changes for the Marvel franchise, but a second season seems unlikely. The initial season's disappointing numbers and low ratings cast doubt on its renewal. However, with the resolution of the initial story, the Skrull storyline intensifies, offering the possibility of a subsequent season or connections to other MCU projects.
2023's Secret Invasion brought the iconic Marvel Comics storyline to the MCU, delivering exciting revelations and laying the groundwork for significant changes to the franchise. The question now arises: will there be a second season of Secret Invasion? Marketed as Nick Fury's final stand, Secret Invasion diverged from the Brian Michael Bendis comics by focusing on the Skrull narrative introduced in Captain Marvel and providing a post-credits scene for Avengers: Endgame.
Rather than serving as a conclusive ending, Secret Invasion unveiled the Skrulls' elaborate plan to infiltrate Earth and assume positions of power, even replacing one of the Avengers in a shocking twist. Bringing together Fury with familiar faces like Maria Hill, Everett K. Ross, and Skrull leader Talos, the series also introduced new characters such as Talos' daughter, G'iah, and pitted them against the formidable supervillain Gravik, portrayed by Kingsley Ben-Adir. Although categorized as a miniseries, Secret Invasion is not a self-contained tale, as its ending lays the groundwork for further exploration of the Skrull storyline. Here's everything we currently know about the possibility of a second season of Secret Invasion.
Will Secret Invasion Season 2 Happen?
Most of the TV shows in the MCU have been treated as miniseries and have not been renewed for second seasons. Secret Invasion may follow the same path. If Marvel Studios bases the chances of Secret Invasion season 2 on the critical and audience reaction to the first season, it's not looking good. The opening episode had low viewership and the show received the lowest rating on Rotten Tomatoes among all MCU TV shows. Additionally, Bob Iger publicly announced that Disney plans to focus more on better releases and avoid overloading creative teams and audience attention with Marvel content. Considering this, it seems unlikely that Secret Invasion season 2 will happen.
However, the first six episodes of Secret Invasion fail to resolve most of the story. While the supervillain threat is dealt with, the Skrull story actually escalates, setting up the need for a follow-up, even if it's not in Secret Invasion season 2. How Marvel plans to address this setup is currently unclear.
How Secret Invasion's Ending Sets Up Season 2 - All Key Articles To Read
Adapting the six-episode Secret Invasion story from Marvel Comics was always considered unlikely, and the initial six episodes did not even attempt it. Instead, Secret Invasion serves as a prologue to the actual Secret Invasion story, involving Gravik's plot to instigate World War III on Earth, aiming to eradicate humanity and claim the planet for the Skrulls. Unfortunately, this leads to the revelation of the Skrulls' existence and sparks panic among humanity. The conclusion strongly resembles the aftermath of Thor's "invasion" of New Mexico before The Avengers in 2012, which SHIELD and Nick Fury utilized to develop heavy weaponry for Project Phase 2. As a result, Earth now considers all aliens as enemies, leading to a hunt for Skrulls and the tragic loss of innocent lives.
This more intriguing Secret Invasion story could be further explored in a second season. Additionally, these events, along with the Skrull hunt led by G'iah in her new Super-Skrull form, collaborating with Olivia Colman's Sonya Falsworth, may play a role in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts. It would make perfect sense for Harrison Ford's President Ross to take charge of President Ritson's alien war and utilize the Thunderbolts in their pursuit. As for Nick Fury, he abandoned the Skrulls once again and retreated to space, purposefully avoiding the final battle. However, he did manage to share a tender moment with his wife, which provides some solace.

Secret Invasion Season 2 Predicted Release Date
With the MCU already brimming with TV shows for Phase 5 and beyond, it becomes challenging to predict a potential release date for Secret Invasion season 2. The determining factor lies in how much impact Secret Invasion season 1 will have on the rest of the MCU. This impact will dictate the need for season 2 to connect with other movies and TV shows. If the storyline unfolds primarily in Brave New World and Thunderbolts, season 2 may not be necessary. However, if the successful collaboration between Falsworth and G'iah - two standout characters from the show - continues, a follow-up season could be announced, possibly with a different title. If the format follows that of Loki, the only MCU TV show to receive a second season thus far, we can anticipate Secret Invasion season 2 to debut in the latter half of 2025. This would position it as part of Phase 6.
Secret Invasion Season 2 Cast: Who Could Return?
Given the MCU's reputation for eliminating major characters, it is noteworthy that Secret Invasion did not mark Nick Fury's final appearance. This had already been hinted at through The Marvels marketing prior to the release of Secret Invasion. While some MCU characters faced permanent demise, such as Talos portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn and Agent Maria Hill played by Cobie Smulders, the fate of Kingsley Ben-Adir's Gravik remains uncertain due to the intriguing nature of his powers. Taking all of this into consideration, the potential cast for Secret Invasion season 2 may include the following characters:
Emilia Clarke - G'iah
Olivia Colman - Sonya Falsworth
Harrison Ford would take over the role of President Ross, replacing Dermot Mulroney's President Ritson.
There is a potential for both Martin Freeman's Agent Ross and Don Cheadle's James Rhodes to make a comeback and shed light on their replacement by Skrulls. While Rhodey is set to explore that aftermath in Armor Wars, Agent Ross's future in the MCU remains uncertain. It would be absurd to think that the MCU would completely overlook this storyline. If only there were still the One Shots or tie-in comics to fill these gaps, rather than relying on a $200m series that lacks justification.
Nick Fury may not need to make a comeback in Secret Invasion season 2, ironically. The Skrull narrative has progressed beyond his character, mainly. The only unresolved matter is whether he will face any consequences for the Avengers DNA project, as the involved heroes are unlikely to be happy about their DNA being taken without consent. Nevertheless, Fury has a knack for dodging trouble, so perhaps the MCU will simply transition to other storylines without much fanfare.
