Marvel's Spider-Man 2 fans are already familiar with the characters set to appear in the PS5-exclusive sequel. Wraith, Prowler, and Black Cat will potentially serve as allies, while The Lizard has been confirmed as a side villain. The main antagonists, Kraven the Hunter and Venom, have also been confirmed to intersect with the web-slingers' journey.
While boss battles against iconic Spider-Man villains are highly anticipated, players will also find themselves engaging in combat with basic enemy types. In the previous games, players faced off against factions such as the Inner Demons, Sable mercenaries, and Roxxon. This time, they will encounter Kraven's mercenary group. However, there may be another group of adversaries that Insomniac Games has yet to reveal: civilians infected by the Symbiote.
Symbiote-Infected Citizens Are a Perfect Fit For Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Symbiote-infected civilians have made appearances in previous games featuring the friendly neighborhood hero. For instance, in the popular game Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, the villain Carnage brought SHIELD enemies back to life as Symbiote zombies. A similar situation occurred in the now-defunct MMO Marvel Heroes, where players encountered mindless husks controlled by fragments of a Symbiote.
Regarding the attack methods of Symbiote enemies, there are a few possibilities. One option is for them to use similar attacks to Peter when he wears the Symbiote suit in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. This would require players to dodge powerful tendrils and find ways to bypass their shielding ability. Alternatively, they could behave like the individuals corrupted by Mr. Negative in the first game. These infected individuals would have weak attacks and be easily defeated individually, but they could pose a threat when attacking Peter and Miles in large groups. Perhaps Peter could develop a cure that could be incorporated into his webs, providing players with a means to remove the Symbiote from the unwilling hosts.
From a narrative standpoint, the most intriguing option would be to place the blame on Peter Parker himself. As fans are aware, Peter will eventually lose the Symbiote, allowing it to attach to Venom's enigmatic host. However, the extent of the chaos he will cause prior to that remains unknown. It is possible that every individual Peter attacks with the Symbiote becomes infected, resulting in the emergence of exceptionally formidable street criminals and Kraven mercenaries. Once he regains control, a remorseful Peter could embark on a mission to defeat and cure all the criminals he inadvertently infected during his period of instability.
In order to prevent players from becoming bored with Marvel's Spider-Man 2, it is crucial for the game to have a good variety of enemies. While Kraven's enemy faction may offer some basic foes to battle, it would be even better if Insomniac Games included different groups of basic enemies with unique abilities. Looking at previous games, the Symbiote has proven to be an effective tool for creating diverse enemy types. Additionally, incorporating infected enemies could not only provide gameplay variety but also enhance the game's narrative. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is set to release on October 20 for PS5.
