Highlights
Fusions in the Dragon Ball franchise merge two warriors into a single body, creating a powerful new character with enhanced abilities.
Fusions such as Gotenks and Vegito have endeared themselves to fans, thanks to their unique personalities and exceptional power.
Despite their rarity, fusions offer the heroes a means to vanquish formidable foes, injecting suspense into the storyline and avoiding any sense of monotony.
In the Dragon Ball franchise, fusions have been a recurring element since early on, but their true potential was revealed in the Buu Saga. Fusions allow two warriors to merge into a single entity, creating a completely new being that not only possesses the combined powers of the fighters but also a significant power boost. This resulted in a character capable of defeating any villain they encountered.
This ability quickly became a fan favorite, as the fusion formed a unique character with their own distinct personality. The first fusion we witnessed was Goten and Trunks merging to form Gotenks, a charismatic and powerful fusion who bravely battled Super Buu, even reaching the Super Saiyan 3 level. This was followed by the legendary Vegito, formed from the fusion of Goku and Vegeta. Vegito was hailed as the perfect warrior and effortlessly overwhelmed Gohan absorbed Super Buu. Since then, fusion has been reintroduced through either the Potara Earrings or the Metamoran Fusion Dance. As the series progresses, it's intriguing to speculate what the future holds for fusions.
Fusions in Super
Fusions have made a comeback in Dragon Ball Super, although they have been infrequent. In the Goku Black arc, Vegito returned by fusing with the Potara Earrings to defeat Merged Zamasu. With his raw power, Vegito dominated Zamasu but the fusion ended due to the timer.
In the Tournament of Power, Grand Zeno allowed fusions after changing a rule. Characters from Universe 3 merged into a robot and Agnilasa, a giant enemy, was also formed. The most notable fusion was Kefla, a merger of Universe 6 Saiyans Caulifla and Kale. Kefla proved to be a formidable opponent, causing trouble for Ultra Instinct Omen Goku before being eliminated. Kefla's strength, durability, and Vegito-like personality made her a fan favorite.
Finally, the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie introduced a long-awaited character into the canon: Gogeta. Fans have been eager to see this Saiyan for decades. Gogeta is the result of Goku and Vegeta performing the Metamoran Fusion Dance, which officially brings Gogeta into the canon Dragon Ball timeline. While Gogeta previously appeared in the non-canon 1995 movie Fusion Reborn, his inclusion in Broly finally made him an official part of the series. Fans were thrilled to see Gogeta's debut and his ability to effortlessly defeat Broly by tapping into his Super Saiyan Blue form.
What's Next for Fusions?
Fusions, despite their potential to guarantee victory over the current villain, are a rare occurrence in the story, particularly for Vegeta and Goku. Their aversion to fusion stems from various factors, such as the loss of individuality and control over their bodies, resulting in the creation of a new being. However, the primary reason for Goku and Vegeta's disdain towards fusion is rooted in their Saiyan heritage. As Saiyans, they relish in the thrill of combat and strive to overcome their opponents through their own strength and abilities. Accepting that an adversary surpasses them in power and relying on external assistance is something they abhor.
This is a strategic and logical choice thematically. By portraying fusions as easy solutions to any problem, it suggests that the characters have a simple way out and eliminates the need for worry if new foes appear. However, this approach also creates a lack of tension and makes the story become flat and uninteresting.
Therefore, it may be necessary to integrate fusions into the story with the same rarity as they currently are. Considering that Dragon Ball Super will eventually come to an end, it would be wise to reserve fusions as a reliance for only the utmost pinnacle of strength in the final arc. This way, they can be used against the strongest villains who cannot be defeated through any other means. Additionally, the primary timeline could draw inspiration from Super Dragon Ball Heroes, where the convergence of timelines causes multiple versions of heroes to coexist and allows for the presence of both fusions simultaneously.
This could create a situation where a formidable threat requires both Vegito and Gogeta to combat it. This would provide a deeper understanding of these characters and satisfy fans without overshadowing Goku and Vegeta. Another way to incorporate fusion into the storyline is by pitting the Saiyans against a villain who possesses an ability that neutralizes their strength, prompting the need for fusion instead of relying solely on physical power.
Although many fans desire extensive appearances of these characters, there is a risk of mishandling their inclusion, which would disappoint viewers. Nonetheless, the future possibilities for fusion in Dragon Ball are exciting, and fans eagerly anticipate the return of the most powerful characters in the universe.
Dragon Ball Super is available to stream on Funimation & Crunchyroll.
