The puzzles in Hogwarts Legacy play a vital role in the game, forming the foundation for spells like Alohomora and missions like the popular Keeper Trials. These puzzles have kept players engaged throughout their playthroughs, but they have gained a reputation for being challenging and sometimes confusing. The Arithmancy Doors puzzle, in particular, is notorious for causing players to seek outside help to solve it.
Avalanche Software has successfully integrated the mystery of the wizarding world into Hogwarts Legacy, adding hundreds of Field Pages, Disillusionment Chests, and empty frame puzzles to enhance the game's intrigue. These secrets and challenging puzzles have received praise from fans, but some have proven difficult for a significant portion of the player base. The Arithmancy Doors, in particular, have posed a formidable challenge to players' problem-solving skills.
Arithmancy Doors Require a Bit of Math
Arithmancy door puzzles can be found in various locations throughout the renowned school of wizardry and witchcraft. To access the rewards, players must tap into their inner Da Vinci and decipher a code. In order to assist players in overcoming these challenges, Avalanche Software, the developer, has provided a clue within the Arithmancy Study Guide Page and along the perimeter of each door's frame. The study guide contains images numbered from zero to nine, which can be cross-referenced with the door frame, where identical images are displayed. This numerical system proves invaluable in deciphering the Arithmancy code.
There are a total of twelve Arithmancy Doors in Hogwarts Legacy. To solve the puzzles, players must interact with the doors and employ their addition skills to overcome the locks. Each Arithmancy door features two equations on its display. Set within these equations is a number surrounded by images, numbers, and a question mark dial. Locating these dials can be akin to embarking on a treasure hunt, as they may be concealed in adjacent rooms or even on different floors.
Once the dials have been located, the next task is to align the numbers and images on the outer circles to match the figure in the middle. This can be achieved by using the key provided in the study guide. For example, if the middle number is 21 and the numbers in the outer circles are 11 and 2 (with a Graphorn image), players will need to turn the question mark dial until it reaches 8 (corresponding to the Acromantula image). By solving both equations using the key from the Guide Page, the Arithmancy Door will unlock, granting players access to its chests containing Hogwarts Legacy's cosmetic gear.
While completing games without any assistance can be a source of pride for some gamers, there are occasions where challenges arise that require players to compromise and consult walkthroughs. In the case of Hogwarts Legacy, the Arithmancy Doors serve as one of the most notable brain teasers in the entire game, with very little progress possible without the accompanying clues. Unfortunately, the developer overlooked providing an achievement for completing all 12 riddles. Nevertheless, the experience of scratching one's head and hunting for clues is sufficient to leave players satisfied.
Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Switch version releasing November 14.
