The Talking Flowers in Super Mario Bros. Wonder may have a larger role in gameplay and story beyond background commentary.
The Talking Flowers can function as non-playable character (NPC) guides, offering players directions, clues, and advice to aid their advancement.
A potential storyline could revolve around the connection between the Talking Flowers and the Wonder Flower, hinting at their relationship.
The Talking Flowers in Super Mario Bros. Wonder may have received attention in Nintendo's announcement, but they could have a more significant role in the gameplay and story than just providing background commentary. Alongside other interesting additions like the Wonder Flower and Elephant Mario, the Talking Flowers stood out because of their voiced dialogue. Although the trailer only revealed a few voice lines, like greeting Mario or commenting on Goombas, the uniqueness of the Talking Flowers suggests they could have a larger role.
Throughout the Super Mario Bros. Wonder trailer, glimpses of various Talking Flowers can be seen in different forms, such as flying or being colored red. While 2D Mario games don't typically delve deep into their stories, unlike the 3D ones, Super Mario Bros. Wonder might break the mold. Some players already see this game as a departure from the New Super Mario Bros. series. Compared to background characters in Super Mario Galaxy, the Talking Flowers could serve a functional purpose, similar to boards, or play a key role in the game's story, much like the Lumas.
Talking Flowers Could Be Super Mario Wonder's NPC Guides
In previous Super Mario games, there have been background NPCs that serve the purpose of adding diversity to the levels and assisting the player with directions, hints, and tips to complete the levels. For example, in Super Mario 3D World, there are Sprixies with binoculars that allow Mario to see the Goal Pole from different parts of the level. In this game, the Sprixies play a crucial role in the story as they are kidnapped by Bowser and the player's task is to rescue them.
While the Talking Flowers in Super Mario Bros. Wonder may not have a deep connection to the game's story or world like the Sprixies do, their role is likely to provide support to the player. Similar to Super Mario Galaxy's Boards or the Message Blocks from Super Mario World, the Talking Flowers are introduced to inform players about new content, such as power-ups and level designs, or to provide general information for newcomers to the series. Despite having voices, the Talking Flowers are most likely just the game's version of an NPC guide.
Talking Flowers Might be Important for Super Mario Bros. Wonder's Story
Super Mario Bros. Wonder introduces the intriguing Wonder Flower, which has the ability to alter both Mario and his surroundings in peculiar ways. The game's storyline may provide valuable insights into the mysterious connection between the enigmatic Wonder Flower and the equally peculiar Talking Flowers. With their various forms, spoken dialogue, and frequent appearances in the game's trailer, it suggests that players have yet to uncover the full extent of their importance.
Drawing parallels to the Lumas from Super Mario Galaxy, the Talking Flowers might share a connection with the Wonder Flower. Just like the Lumas, they could serve as guides for the player, aiding in their progression through each level. Additionally, the Lumas possessed different colors, with one even granting Mario a new Spinning ability. Similarly, the Talking Flowers in Super Mario Bros. Wonder might fulfill a similar role in keeping the player informed and advancing in the game. However, they could also play a deeper role in the game's world by assisting Mario in mastering the power of the Wonder Flower before Bowser, in order to save the Mushroom Kingdom.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be released on October 20, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch.
