Unveiling the Dark Truth: Investigating the Mysterious Death of Reuters Journalist Issam Abdallah

Reuters editor-in-chief Alessandra Galloni urges thorough probe into the tragic death of Issam Abdallah, a courageous Reuters video journalist, fatally hit by a shell during his coverage of the Israel-Lebanon cross-border fire

Reuters editor-in-chief, Alessandra Galloni, has urged Israeli authorities to initiate a prompt, comprehensive, and transparent investigation into the tragic death of Reuters video journalist, Issam Abdallah. Abdallah lost his life on Friday after being hit by a shell fired from Israel while documenting the exchange of fire across the Israel-Lebanon border. In a video shared on X, Galloni reiterated her plea for an investigation that includes concrete evidence and a clear explanation.

Galloni requested the Israel Defense Forces to provide clearer guidelines for engagement in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Additionally, he appealed to Lebanon, who allegedly possesses evidence related to the attack, and any other authorities with information to share it.

"In this conflict, I implore all parties to cooperate with and show respect towards the media, in order to guarantee the safety of journalists reporting in this region," expressed Galloni. "At Reuters, delivering news on global events accurately, with integrity, independence, and devoid of bias, is fundamental to our values. It is of utmost importance for our journalists to be able to carry out their work in a secure manner."

Reuters reported that Abdallah, aged 37, was tragically killed while live streaming for broadcasters. The obituary stated that he was laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown of Khiyam in southern Lebanon. Abdallah is survived by his mother, two brothers, and a sister. Thaer Al-Sudani and Maher Nazeh, the two other journalists from Reuters who were injured in the incident, have since been discharged from the hospital.

Prior to the Friday incident, at least 10 journalists had been killed since the onset of the war, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
