Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is just around the corner, and leading up to its release, the original comic writer shares his favorite scenes from the upcoming anime.
If you were a nerd in the 2010s, chances are you're familiar with Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Directed by Edgar Wright and based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novels, the film follows the story of Scott Pilgrim (played by Michael Cera), the bass guitarist for a garage-rock band. Scott has always had no trouble finding a girlfriend, but getting rid of them is another story. However, when Ramona Flowers (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) enters his life, he soon discovers that she comes with a whole load of trouble: a group of ex-boyfriends who will go to extreme lengths to remove him from her list of potential suitors.
Now, the same cast is returning for the anime series titled "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," set to premiere on Netflix this month. The series is directed by BenDavid Grabinski, with the writer and original creator, O'Malley, also on board.
During a recent interview, we had the opportunity to speak with O'Malley himself, who shared his personal favorite scenes from the upcoming anime.
Scott Pilgrim comics writer reveals he loved the music and action scenes in the anime
During a recent roundtable with Bryan Lee O’Malley, Dexerto had the opportunity to gain insight into the scenes that excited him the most. Surprisingly, his favorite moments were those which he couldn't have effectively portrayed in the original comic format.
When discussing the comparisons between comic adaptations, he expressed admiration for Edgar Wright's work on Scott Pilgrim. He believed that Wright established a unique visual language and made it one of the best video game movies. Rather than trying to compete with the movie, his focus was on allowing the animators to unleash their creativity. Animation provides more freedom as there are no limitations of gravity, as long as the emotional logic is preserved. In comparison, his comic art is limited and static.
Regarding the anime adaptation, he was excited about the opportunity to write things that he couldn't do in his comic, such as incorporating sound. He particularly enjoyed a scene where characters played music together, which became one of his favorite moments in the entire show. This was an experience that he would not have been able to achieve in his comic.
The franchise's ardent enthusiasts will likely recognize a particular music scene as a J-Pop sequence, and interestingly, it serves as an homage to the anime classic, Bubblegum Crisis.
"Yeah, so this anime reference is inspired by the classic Bubblegum Crisis series from the early 80s. The song featured is the opening theme of the very first episode. Personally, I've always been fond of that song. It's quite amusing to have that actor sing it in Japanese. Moreover, the animators did an impressive job transforming it into a quirky music video that I'm completely obsessed with. I understand that not everyone might grasp the reference, but just listening to the guy singing in Japanese is truly astonishing."
The animators of Scott Pilgrim used action to create some of O'Malley's favorite scenes. They started by writing the action scenes loosely and allowing the animators to work their magic. One Ramona scene, in particular, had a lot of incredible elements. They intentionally avoided giving strict instructions and instead allowed the artists to showcase their skills and let their imaginations run free. We will have to wait for the release of Scott Pilgrim's anime to experience it all firsthand.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will release on Netflix on November 17. Read more about it here.
