Michael Cera opens up about his emotional experience during the filming of Scott Pilgrim movie, revealing how it left him feeling 'depressed' despite his close bond with co-stars

Summary

Michael Cera recently shared his struggles with post-filming depression following the completion of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. After spending nine months shooting the film, he formed deep connections with his co-stars and couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness when the production came to an end.

Cera's involvement in Scott Pilgrim set him apart from his previous acting endeavors, demanding a lengthier filming period and a stronger bond with the rest of the cast.

Despite his initial doubts about pursuing acting, Cera has consistently secured roles in highly successful films, and he is currently set to revive his character as Scott Pilgrim in a Netflix animated series. The triumph of his career strongly implies that he made the correct choice by remaining in Hollywood.

In a recent interview with GQ, Michael Cera opened up about his battle with depression following the completion of filming for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The movie, released in 2010 and directed by Edgar Wright, is based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel series. Starring alongside Hollywood favorites Aubrey Plaza and Kieran Culkin, Cera portrays Scott Pilgrim, who takes on the challenge of defeating his girlfriend's seven evil exes.

During the interview, Cera revealed that the nine months spent on set allowed him to form strong bonds with his co-stars. The extensive rehearsal period prior to filming further deepened these connections. When his time as Scott Pilgrim came to an end, Cera admitted feeling a sense of depression, explaining, "It all just goes away, and you’re like, ‘Where did everybody go?’”. Cera’s Acting Uncertainty in Other Films

The constant enjoyment we experienced can be attributed to the amazing synergy we had with everyone. This sense of unity stemmed primarily from Edgar and the vibrant energy he exuded. Prior to commencing our film production, we had the opportunity to rehearse and spend extensive time together. As the movie neared its conclusion, I felt a strong sense of belonging, as if this world and this group of friends would be everlasting. When it was all over, I felt a tinge of sadness as everything dissolved, and I wondered, "Where did everyone go?" Although one becomes accustomed to this as they age and gain experience in acting, I couldn't help but feel a sense of loss. Despite the exhausting nature of the project, I could have continued making it indefinitely. I dedicated around nine months, which is an overwhelming amount of time, to this endeavor.

Prior to his portrayal of Scott Pilgrim, Cera was no stranger to the world of acting. At the young age of 14, he secured the role of George Michael Bluth in Arrested Development. However, sitcoms typically have shorter shooting schedules, so spending a remarkable nine months with the same group of people was a unique experience for him. Moreover, at just 22 years old when he landed the role, Cera was still considered a Hollywood newcomer compared to the actor with a well-established decade-long career that fans recognize today.

Despite considering quitting acting after experiencing overwhelming fame from starring in Superbad, Michael Cera has continued to find success in the entertainment industry. Recently, he delighted fans by playing the beloved Barbie character Allan in a blockbuster movie. Cera will also be reprising his memorable role as Scott Pilgrim in an upcoming Netflix anime adaptation of the graphic novels, alongside the original cast. With a diverse range of roles under his belt, it is clear that Cera has made the right choice in pursuing his acting career.
