Sebastian Stan is trading in his role as a Marvel anti-hero for that of a real-life controversial figure.
Stan, famous for his role as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has been cast to play a young Donald Trump in the upcoming film The Apprentice, directed by Ali Abbasi. Jeremy Strong from Succession will also star as lawyer Roy Cohn, with Maria Bakalova from Bodies Bodies Bodies playing Trump’s first wife, Ivana. The script will be written by Gabriel Sherman, known for his 2018 biography of Fox News founder Roger Ailes, The Loudest Voice in the Room. The film's title appears to be a nod to Trump's reality series The Apprentice, which aired for 15 seasons from 2004 to 2017.
Stan's portrayal of the former president follows a string of successful roles in projects like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Fresh, Sharper, Ghosted, and Bupkis. The official logline for the film states, “It’s a mentor-protege story that charts the origins of an American dynasty. The Apprentice will have Abbasi and Sherman as well as Scythia Films’ Daniel Beckerman, Profile Pictures’ Jacob Jarek, and Taylored Films’ Ruth Treacy as coproducers. Grant Johnson, Gabriel Sherman, and Amy Baer will also be taking on the roles of executive producers.
