Sarah Jessica Parker opened up about her past relationship with Robert Downey Jr. in a recent New Yorker profile. The And Just Like That star, who is now 58 years old, reflected on how their differing lifestyles impacted their relationship. Downey Jr., also 58, had battled substance abuse issues for several years before achieving sobriety in 2003.

"Parker revealed that despite facing dismissive attitudes from people around her, she remained committed to providing stability and establishing a sense of consistency for her former partner. She believed that her efforts contributed to his ability to be punctual and reliable. While this situation would often leave her feeling angry and embarrassed, Parker confessed that she never felt the need to go through a rebellious phase herself. Their relationship, which began in 1984 and ended in 1991, blossomed on the set of their movie Firstborn. Despite their romantic journey coming to an end, both actors have consistently expressed admiration and affection for one another."

During an interview with YES Network in April 2018, the Sex and the City alum described the relationship as an adventurous and important eight years of her life. She emphasized that they had spent a significant amount of time together and he was the first person she had ever lived with. She expressed her pride in witnessing his professional growth as his career was just beginning.

On the other hand, the Iron Man star openly acknowledged that his addiction issues were the cause of the relationship's downfall in a February 2008 interview with Parade. He conveyed his "great respect" for Parker through a representative speaking to the New Yorker.

He explained that his drinking and drug addiction were not compatible with Sarah Jessica's lifestyle and values. Despite her efforts to support and assist him, he was unable to overcome his issues. He acknowledged his deep love for Sarah Jessica but realized that love alone was insufficient to overcome his problems.

During a visit to New York City in 2015, Downey Jr. and his ex-girlfriend had a reunion. He shared the details of this meetup on The Howard Stern Show in April of that year.

Upon seeing her, Downey Jr. was impressed by his former girlfriend's qualities. He described her as great, cool, funny, and in-command. He also had the opportunity to meet her children and witness the lifestyle she shares with her husband, Matthew Broderick. Downey Jr. expressed a deep respect for both of them.

Parker and Broderick, 61, have a son named James Wilkie, who is now 20 years old, and twin daughters named Tabitha and Marion, who are 13 years old. As for Downey Jr., he has a son named Exton, who is 11 years old, and a daughter named Avri, who is 8 years old. He shares them with his wife Susan Levin, whom he married in 2005. Additionally, he has another son named Indio from his previous marriage to Deborah Falconer.

In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter in October 2014, the renowned actor revealed that his wife, Levin, who is now 49, issued him an ultimatum before their wedding. She made it clear to him that he had to choose between getting sober or losing her. Downey Jr. described this conversation as the most straightforward and impactful one he has ever had in his life.

After Levin chimed in to note that ultimatums “only work if the person’s ready,” Downey Jr. replied, “You make me ready.”
