In most horror franchises, there is a recurring pattern where the focus shifts from the heroes to the villains in every sequel. Friday the 13th is a prime example, with Jason Voorhees barely making an appearance in the first movie, but becoming the central character by the fourth installment. Similarly, Alien revolves around a group of space truckers who encounter an unstoppable monster. Although Ellen Ripley emerges as the sole survivor, she is much more than just the woman who defeats the Xenomorph.
Despite the cultural dominance of Alien, its original impact is somewhat diminished. Ripley, being the most rule-abiding crew member, relies on her caution and instincts to survive. Surprisingly, Sigourney Weaver was not even the top-billed actor on the movie poster; that spot belonged to Tom Skerrit's character, Dallas, who feels like the hero of the story. However, when Ripley ultimately showcases her true inner strength in the face of immense pressure, it is an awe-inspiring testament to her acting abilities.
Alien
Ellen Louise Ripley was born on January 7, 2092 in the lunar colony Olympia. At the age of two, her hometown was placed under quarantine for sixteen years due to a mysterious plague outbreak. She grew up in a cramped quarantine facility and this restrictive upbringing influenced her decision to pursue a Master's degree in engineering from New York Aeronautics University and join the US Merchant Navy.
During her time in the navy, Ripley served as co-pilot on the vessel Zelazny where she met her husband, Alex. Details about Alex remain scarce, but Ripley's pregnancy resulted in the birth of their daughter, Amanda. Unfortunately, Alex left the family after three years. Ripley remarried, but her second marriage was as unstable as the first. Amanda, being rebellious, frequently ran away from home.
In 2122, Ripley requested a leave of absence from her employer, Weyland-Yutani, in order to spend more time with her daughter. They granted her request on the condition that she complete one final mission aboard the USCSS Nostromo.
As Warrant Officer on the Nostromo, Ripley's mission to Thedus went smoothly, but complications arose during the return journey. The crew, consisting of Ripley, Dallas, Parker, Kane, Lambert, Brett, and Ash, were unexpectedly awakened from cryosleep ten months ahead of schedule. They were directed to respond to a distress signal coming from an uncharted moon named LV-426.
Ripley witnessed Dallas, Lambert, and Kane venture into unfamiliar territory, only to quickly return after Kane was attacked by a mysterious creature. Familiar with quarantine protocols, Ripley insisted on a 24-hour isolation period before allowing the rescue team to board. However, the science officer, Ash, disregarded her instructions and let the trio into the ship. The creature eventually detached from Kane and a small animal emerged from his chest, wreaking havoc on the ship. This was the start of the deadly Alien's relentless killing spree among the crew members. Recognizing her leadership abilities, Ripley quickly took charge of the situation.
Ripley attempted to communicate with MU/TH/UR, the Nostromo's onboard AI system, in order to address a pressing matter. To her surprise, she stumbled upon a hidden directive from Weyland-Yutani. It was revealed that Ash, one of the crew members, had been assigned the task of capturing a living organism by any means necessary. Ripley then came to the horrifying realization that the monstrous creature responsible for slaughtering her comrades had been deliberately unleashed upon them, serving as a ruthless weapon for their employers.
In a shocking confrontation with Parker, Ripley uncovered Ash's true identity as a synthetic being. Determined to escape the doomed Nostromo, she made the decision to activate the ship's self-destruct system and flee using an escape shuttle. Tragically, Parker and Lambert lost their lives during the chaotic process, leaving Ripley utterly alone on the deteriorating vessel.
Executing her desperate plan, Ripley discovered to her dismay that her relentless tormentor had managed to infiltrate the escape vessel. Reacting swiftly, she donned a spacesuit, initiated an airlock, and fired a harpoon at the creature before incinerating it using the ship's thrusters. With the threat finally vanquished, Ripley left behind a meticulous explanation of the terrifying events she had endured as she entered into stasis.
Aliens
After a record-breaking 57 years in stasis, Ripley awakens to face disbelief from Weyland-Yutani regarding her harrowing experiences. Consequently, she is stripped of her rank and deemed unfit for duty. Devastatingly, she also learns about the demise of Amanda Ripley at the age of 62. Unbeknownst to Ripley, Weyland-Yutani has established a mining colony called Hadley's Hope on LV-426. In an attempt to uncover the sudden loss of communication from the colony, Ripley reluctantly joins a Colonial Marine expedition. However, her cooperation dissipates when she discovers that Weyland-Yutani's true agenda revolves around profiting from the now-dubbed Xenomorphs.
Ripley, along with the Marines, discovers a planet overrun by Xenomorphs. The soldiers are swiftly consumed by the terrifying creatures. In the midst of the chaos, Ripley stumbles upon the only surviving colonist, a young girl known as Newt. With the fate of the group hanging in the balance, Ripley takes it upon herself to eliminate the Xenomorph threat once and for all. Employing her skills, she commandeers an APC and drives deep into the heart of the Xenomorph nest, triggering a chain reaction that will ultimately obliterate the entire colony. Determined to save themselves, Ripley, Colonel Dwayne Hicks, Newt, and the synthetic individual named Bishop manage to escape on the Sulaco. However, their respite is short-lived as an Alien Queen launches a brutal attack. Thinking on her feet, Ripley utilizes a power loader to force the monstrous creature out into the vastness of space, ensuring the safety of her newfound friends. As they once again enter stasis, the group sets course for Earth, their primary objective.
Alien 3
Ripley awakens on Fiorina 'Fury' 161 after the crash landing of the Sulaco, which sadly resulted in the deaths of Newt, Hicks, and Bishop. To prevent any potential contamination, the guards incinerate their bodies. It is revealed that a Facehugger secretly boarded the Sulaco and attacked a dog on Fiorina. As always, Weyland-Yutani was aware that they were transporting a dangerous creature. Throughout the prison, the new Xenomorph mercilessly claims the lives of many, yet it inexplicably spares Ripley. Gradually, Ripley discovers that she is carrying the embryo of a new Alien Queen. Determined to prevent its existence, she decides to sacrifice herself. However, Weyland-Yutani agents demand that she surrender to them, but she defiantly refuses. Ultimately, Ripley successfully eliminates the Xenomorph on Fiorina and sacrifices herself by immersing into the same furnace that consumed Newt and Hicks. Although Ellen Ripley spent most of her life under the oppressive control of Weyland-Yutani's thirst for power, her final act was to defy them.
Alien: Resurrection
200 years following the heroic sacrifice of Ellen Ripley, Weyland-Yutani manipulates circumstances to prevent her from finding peace in death. Utilizing cloning technology, Ripley is replicated with the reemergence of the Alien Queen embryo. This latest clone, Ripley 8, now possesses both human and Xenomorph DNA, granting her enhanced strength, acidic blood, and a psychic connection with the Xenomorph species. The United Systems Military expresses interest in studying the Queen, prompting Ripley 8, who retains fragments of Ripley's memories, to make a decision. Determined to halt the experiments, she partners with a band of mercenaries to destroy the USM Auriga from within. During their mission, the Queen unexpectedly gives birth to a hybrid creature that displays human characteristics. Curiously, the hybrid recognizes Ripley 8 as an ally and turns against its own mother, resulting in her demise. Heartbroken, Ripley 8 is compelled to eliminate the Newborn hybrid and deliberately crashes the Auriga into Earth. Left to wander an unfamiliar Earth, Ripley 8 remains a perpetual symbol of endurance amidst a life filled with tragedy.
