Highlights
Overwatch 2's Gothenburg mission shows that Blizzard is willing to narrow the focus of PvE levels to four heroes whenever the story calls for it.
A mission centered around the Junkers - Junker Queen, Wrecking Ball, Roadhog, and Junkrat - has the potential to be successful. It would offer a visually distinct environment, with the map set in New Junk City, and the dynamic between these larger-than-life characters would undoubtedly be enjoyable.
PvE content has finally been added to Overwatch 2, much to the delight of players. The initial lineup of missions has been well-received, with the cinematics doing a great job of bringing beloved characters together. Additionally, the inclusion of Overwatch 2's lore codex has proven to be an effective way of getting casual fans more involved in the unfolding story. However, while these missions are enjoyable, they are relatively short, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what the future holds for the game.
Although the next few seasons of Overwatch 2 will not feature story missions, it has been confirmed that India will be one of the upcoming levels. As hinted at the end of Gothenburg, the mission will likely involve Genji embarking on a rescue mission to save Zenyatta from the clutches of Talon members Widowmaker and Sombra. Furthermore, Gothenburg may be setting the stage for another mission that introduces hero restrictions, allowing players to only choose from a limited number of characters. It is speculated that future missions may focus on the Junkers, making it a logical choice for a level centered around them.
A Junker Mission in Overwatch 2 Already Has Four Heroes Lined Up To Fight
Invasion has brought the main Overwatch team back together, with a focus on missions involving this crucial faction. However, it's important to also consider other groups outside of Overwatch. Neutral parties like Symmetra and Vishkar, as well as Lifeweaver and fellow Support character Illari, exist. Hanzo is eager for redemption, while Kiriko could potentially trade in their small-scale vigilantism for a role in Winston's peacekeeping organization. But perhaps the most significant group to highlight are the Junkers, as they offer the opportunity to explore four different playable heroes in PvE.
These heroes include the Junker Queen, Wrecking Ball, Roadhog, and Junkrat, all of whom have made the Australian Outback their home. A mission set in New Junk City - the expansive map featured in Overwatch 2's new Flashpoint game mode - would provide a visually diverse experience compared to the levels in Invasion. The exact involvement of the Junkers in the fight is uncertain, as Junkertown has remained neutral, though their animosity towards Omnics is worth considering. For the Junker Queen and her followers, the chance to combat the corrupt Omnics of Null Sector could serve as a strong incentive to assist Overwatch.
One of the highlights of this group is the potential for interesting interactions that could occur during a PvE story mission. As the champion of Junker Queen, Wrecking Ball is bound to receive admiration from the royal Tank, and it's amusing to imagine his mech showing respect in response to her commands. On the flip side, Queen's disdain for Junkrat and Roadhog is well-known, so it would be hilarious to listen to the explosives expert try to squirm his way out of conflict. Additionally, witnessing more of Junkrat and Roadhog's peculiar friendship would be incredibly entertaining. The extensive amount of dialogue written for Overwatch 2 Invasion ensures that these dynamics will be thoroughly explored, creating a delightful experience for fans of the Junkers.
The only hurdle with a mission solely focused on these four characters is the absence of a Support hero on the team. With four hefty Tanks requiring substantial healing, this could pose a challenge. However, it's worth noting that Roadhog, Junker Queen, and Wrecking Ball all possess some form of self-healing. As long as health packs are strategically placed throughout the map for Junkrat, this mission could be successful. Alternatively, Blizzard could consider introducing an unexpected character like Lifeweaver into the mission, as he currently roams the world, evading Vishkar.
By fully focusing on four characters rather than offering a multitude of options, Gothenburg showcases Blizzard's willingness to prioritize smaller groups of characters when the narrative demands it. This approach opens up possibilities for numerous intimate missions, such as Hanzo embarking on a quest to reunite with Kiriko and Genji, with Zenyatta joining as the fourth hero. However, the most evident opportunity lies in a level entirely devoted to The Junkers. Given that Overwatch 2 already features four heroes from this faction, it is highly likely that a mission set in Australia will be introduced in due course.
Overwatch 2 is currently available on a variety of platforms, including PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
