Highlights
Sanctuary Trials brings forth a refreshing addition to Overwatch 2, incorporating replayable PvE elements that avid players are eagerly seeking. The captivating gameplay, coupled with the exhilarating option to either strive for bountiful rewards or indulge in uproarious chaos alongside companions, results in an absolute pleasure to engage with.
In order to keep PvE-only players engaged, Overwatch 2 should explore the possibility of incorporating permanent replayable PvE content. By doing so, player engagement could be strengthened, particularly considering the current decline. However, it is essential to acknowledge that the development team may face challenges in allocating resources, given their existing commitments to create revenue-generating story missions, new heroes, and maps. As a temporary measure, seasonal events such as Trials of Sanctuary can be utilized to fulfill the need for PvE content.
Since the release of its first story missions, Invasion, in August 2023, Overwatch 2 has fully embraced its PvE content. While players need to purchase these features, there are also free PvE events available, such as the recently launched Trials of Sanctuary. This co-op game mode for four players follows a similar style to previous PvE missions and has received high praise from players. One of the key factors contributing to its popularity is a feature that should be implemented in all future Overwatch 2 PvE content.
Trials of Sanctuary is part of Overwatch 2's Halloween Terror 2023 event. Players can select from a pool of six different heroes inspired by the Diablo series, including Lifeweaver and Illari, who are dressed as a Cleric and Nightraven, respectively. Throughout the game mode, players can collect power-ups like treasure chests, which enhance their stats like attack power and health, as well as epic weapons that grant the heroes powerful new abilities. They must combat demonic foes like Lilith Moira and Azmodan Wrecking Ball. Additionally, the beloved seasonal game mode Junkenstein's Revenge has made a return in the Halloween Terror event and will be available until November 1, 2023.
Trials of Sanctuary’s Replayability Should be a Standard for Overwatch 2 PvE
Trials of Sanctuary offers numerous reasons to enjoy it, such as the chance to experience new Diablo-themed hero skins in Overwatch 2 and the exciting power-ups that allow players to effortlessly defeat hoards of Zomnics. The fact that this PvE event is replayable adds to its appeal. Players can invest significant amounts of time into repeating Trials of Sanctuary to earn rewards or simply have chaotic fun with friends. The lack of this replayability feature in much of Overwatch 2's PvE content is a disappointment for players, particularly those who are not interested in the game's core PvP mode.
To engage and retain their PvE-focused players, the Overwatch 2 team could consider making replayable PvE content a permanent aspect of the game. It wouldn't necessarily have to be limited to Trials of Sanctuary. The developers and designers could create similar gameplay experiences with different themes, power-ups, and rewards to keep things fresh. However, implementing permanently replayable PvE content presents challenges. It requires a significant commitment from the team, who are already occupied with revenue-generating story missions, the introduction of new heroes each season, and the creation of new maps.
Moreover, investing resources in short, replayable PvE content could yield positive results by enticing players to consistently log in. This is particularly important considering the declining player engagement in Overwatch 2. Even dedicated fans of the game now only explore the new limited content for a few days before temporarily signing off until the next season.
In the meantime, players can temporarily satisfy their desire for PvE content through seasonal events. Judging by Blizzard's plans, it seems they will continue to introduce game modes like this month's Trials of Sanctuary and the previous Underworld event with each new season. Consequently, fans who prefer PvE-only gameplay can anticipate a new game mode in addition to the popular Yeti Hunt during the upcoming Winter Event mentioned in the Overwatch 2 2023 Roadmap by the developers.
Overwatch 2 is available now on the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
