Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One director, Christopher McQuarrie, sheds light on the reasoning behind selecting the next major threat in the film, which aligns with current concerns surrounding AI. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) embarks on yet another mission, leading the IMF team on a quest to acquire a crucial key capable of neutralizing a perilous new sentient AI known as the Entity. Several factions compete to possess both parts of the key, as they relentlessly pursue a means to gain control over the Entity. With Part One concluding with Ethan and the IMF team poised to confront the Entity, Part Two promises to delve further into the substantial questions surrounding the potential dangers of real-world AI. In an interview with Collider, McQuarrie exposes how the escalating fears surrounding AI significantly impacted the movie, providing a captivating perspective on the hazards associated with AI. Peruse his comprehensive statement below:
In 2018/2019, we began discussing the next threat for the Mission franchise. We've explored nuclear, chemical, and biological threats, as well as the enigma of the Rabbit's Foot. To keep things fresh, we shifted our focus to technology, specifically artificial intelligence (AI). When I initially pitched the idea to Tom [Cruise], I mentioned that a few years ago, it might have been too complex for most audiences to grasp. However, now, AI is widely discussed, making it a perfect fit for our storyline.
To explain further, I draw a parallel to the Cold War. During my upbringing, the Cold War felt very real and imminent. We lived with the constant fear of nuclear annihilation, aware that a war between nuclear powers could happen at any moment. Therefore, when watching a Cold War-themed movie, the threat was tangible without requiring explicit exposition. It was something viewers inherently understood and brought with them to the film. So, Tom and I delved into the question of what anxiety audiences carry with them now. It's no longer the Cold War or the war on terror; it's something new, and we wanted to identify and address this gripping tension.
In the zeitgeist, there was a prevailing anxiety regarding the influence of technology on our lives. Our aim was to alleviate this anxiety for the audience by offering a sense of release through the movie. Just like when people watched Top Gun in 1986 during the Cold War, they brought their anxieties to the movie but found solace in the reassurance that everything would ultimately be alright. Our goal was to show them a way out.
Starting from 2018/2019, my co-writer Erik Jendresen and I have been discussing AI, algorithms, and information technology. We have spent a considerable amount of time working on this project as well as Part Two. In Part Two, there are certain aspects that are remarkably foresighted. If you find the current concept intriguing, Part Two will surely astonish you.
Why Mission: Impossible 7's AI Is So Haunting
The Entity, with its ability to calculate Ethan's every move, is undeniably the most daunting villain he has ever faced in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. What makes it even more terrifying is its elusive nature, as it operates within a mechanical and technological framework that makes it challenging for Ethan to combat. While shutting down the AI body is a possible solution, it requires intricate coding to override the system, as seen in Dead Reckoning Part One.
Adding to the fear factor, the Entity is omnipresent and has the uncanny ability to predict IMF's every move. This constant and watchful presence escalates the tension and intensifies the situation for the team. In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, every moment is filled with suspense as the Entity continuously embodies and delivers on these apprehensions.
To compound the issue, Ethan is unaware of the Entity's desires. The motivations of this mysterious entity are concealed, and the truth may only be revealed with the arrival of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two. As a formidable antagonist, the Entity epitomizes a dangerous combination of action, intrigue, and the unsettling uncertainty surrounding the safety of AI in the real world. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One skillfully utilizes this threat to craft a truly unsettling villain.
