Celebrities like Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus, and more choose not to label their sexuality, embracing the fluidity of love and attraction Discover the stars who advocate for self-expression and breaking the boundaries of traditional norms

As LGBTQ+ representation in media becomes increasingly prevalent, certain celebrities have begun challenging the pressure to disclose their sexual orientation.

Harry Styles, for instance, expressed in a 2017 interview with The Sun that he does not feel compelled to provide an explanation regarding his sexuality. According to him, it is peculiar that individuals should be expected to justify their personal choices, as he firmly believes that everyone should have the freedom to be true to themselves.

Demi Lovato, along with other celebrities, has embraced pansexuality for its inclusive nature. During an appearance on "The Joe Rogan Experience" podcast in March 2021, the singer of "Cool for the Summer" expressed how they have become more fluid and attributed it to being previously closeted. Lovato shared that they are attracted to both men and women, as well as anything in between.

In May 2021, Lovato came out as nonbinary on their podcast. Initially, they announced a switch to using them/them pronouns, but later decided to include she/her pronouns again. During an appearance on the "Spout" podcast in August 2022, the former Disney Channel star explained that this choice was driven by a desire to feel more feminine.

The Grammy nominee discussed the change further in an interview with GQ Spain in June 2023. They expressed the constant need to educate others and explain their identification with those pronouns. This process was incredibly exhausting, which ultimately led them to feel comfortable with the feminine pronoun as well. They simply grew tired of the ongoing struggle.

On the other hand, Cara Delevingne, who has previously dated Jake Bugg and Ashley Benson, has also embraced the pansexual label. In a 2020 interview with Variety, the actress from "Paper Towns" stated that she will always consider herself pansexual. Regardless of how individuals define themselves, whether as 'they,' 'he,' or 'she,' Delevingne falls in love with the person themselves. Her attraction is not limited by gender.

Meanwhile, Lily-Rose Depp, along with other celebrities, believes that it is unnecessary to adhere to any specific label. In 2015, the model participated in a photo series featuring individuals who identify as not exclusively heterosexual. However, she promptly dismissed the notion that this act was her way of publicly coming out.

In an interview with Nylon in 2016, the 16-year-old Dancer actress clarified, "There was a great deal of misunderstanding surrounding that entire situation. Many people interpreted it as me coming out, but that was not my intention. My sole purpose was to emphasize that it is not compulsory to categorize one's sexuality."

Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus and More Stars Who Refuse to Label Their Sexuality: ‘It’s So Fluid’

“I've never felt the need to explain my sexuality,” stated Harry Styles in a 2017 interview with The Sun. He added, "I believe everyone should be free to embrace their true selves without having to justify it to others. It's unfair to expect someone to answer to someone else about such personal matters."

Demi Lovato, along with other celebrities, has embraced pansexuality for its inclusive nature. In a recent interview on "The Joe Rogan Experience" podcast in March 2021, the singer expressed their fluidity and attributed it to their past experience of being closeted. Lovato stated that they are attracted to both men and women, as well as anything in between.

In May 2021, Lovato publicly came out as nonbinary on their podcast. Initially, they announced a switch to using they/them pronouns, but later updated their pronouns to include she/her again. During an appearance on the "Spout" podcast in August 2022, the former Disney Channel star explained that this decision was influenced by feeling more feminine.

The Grammy nominee discussed the change in a June 2023 interview with GQ Spain, elaborating on the need to educate and explain their pronoun identification to others. They expressed that it became exhausting and led them to also find comfort in using feminine pronouns.

In 2015, Lily-Rose Depp, a popular celebrity and model, participated in a photo series featuring individuals who identify as something other than "100 percent straight." However, she later clarified that her involvement in the project was not meant as a way of publicly coming out as a non-heterosexual individual. Rather, Lily-Rose wanted to emphasize the idea that one's sexuality does not need to be defined or labeled.

Harry Styles, the former member of One Direction, believes that the concept of labeling is outdated and that the future lies in embracing a more fluid approach to sexuality. In an interview featured in the June 2022 edition of Better Homes and Gardens, Styles candidly discussed the societal expectations placed upon him to publicly define his sexual orientation.

Miley Cyrus

During a Facebook Q&A session in 2015, the "Malibu" singer was asked about her sexual orientation. In response, she expressed her reluctance to define herself with a label, stating that she is willing to love anyone who accepts and appreciates her for who she truly is. She also emphasized her openness to different possibilities.

In 2016, during an interview with Variety, Cyrus shared that her visit to the LGBTQ center in Los Angeles had a profound impact on her understanding of her own gender identity.

She expressed, "There was one particular individual I encountered who identified as gender-neutral. Observing them, I saw a unique blend of beauty, sexiness, strength, vulnerability, femininity, and masculinity. I felt an undeniable connection with this person, more so than anyone else in my life." This experience helped Cyrus in her personal journey of self-discovery.

Even though I may appear different, others may not perceive me as neutral as I truly am. However, I strongly identify as neutral. Meeting the first gender-neutral individual was a significant moment for me. As I gained a deeper understanding of my own gender, which is unassigned, I also came to comprehend my sexuality better. It dawned on me that the reason I don't feel straight or gay is because I am not.

Shay Mitchell

Mitchell addressed the persistent inquiries regarding her sexuality in 2017, emphasizing that her character on Pretty Little Liars, Emily, dating women does not define her identity. She expressed, "Emily doesn't categorize herself, and neither do I. I am drawn to a person's essence when it comes to love. Love is love, and I will continue to advocate for this." Furthermore, Mitchell portrayed other LGBTQ+ characters such as Peach Salinger in You and Stella Cole in Dollface.

Amber Heard

The Aquaman actress spoke to Allure about her distaste for labels in their December 2017 issue.

“It's constricting, this LGBTQ label," expressed Heard at that time. "Initially, it served as a protective cover for marginalized individuals who were being denied their rights, but its effectiveness diminishes due to the intricate complexities of human nature. As our understanding grows and we acknowledge the diverse aspects of our identity, we keep adding more letters. Although it initially provided a shield, now we find ourselves confined by it. Embracing the idea of defying categorization is crucial. The number of letters doesn't matter to me. Eventually, it should simply spell out 'WE ARE HUMAN.'"

Kit Connor

In the Netflix coming-of-age series Heartstopper, Connor portrayed the character of Nick Nelson, a rugby player who identifies as bisexual. As the show gained popularity, fans started discussing Connor's own sexuality on social media platforms. To address the ongoing public debate, the English actor took to Twitter to share his response.

“Twitter is hilarious,” he stated in May 2022. “It's amusing how some individuals on this platform claim to know more about my sexuality than I do." In a recent episode of the “Reign With Josh Smith” podcast, he reiterated his thoughts on the matter.

"To be honest, I'm completely secure and at ease with my sexuality," Connor expressed. "I'm not particularly fond of labels and such. I don't place too much importance on them, and I don't feel the need to publicly define myself."
