Eberechi Eze and James Maddison have been named in the England squad for the upcoming matches against Ukraine and Scotland. This news holds special importance for Paul Hall, as he played a role in connecting the two talented playmakers. Hall was involved in Eze's growth during his time at Queens Park Rangers, while also coaching Maddison at Coventry City when he was just 13 years old. As Eze's exceptional skills started shining in the Championship, a move to the Premier League became an undeniable reality. Now, both players face significant choices and opportunities.
"Ebere was faced with a significant decision," Hall confided in We.
"James, having garnered attention from numerous prominent clubs, was being actively pursued. A similar situation unfolded with Ebere. After an impressive loan spell at Wycombe, he returned to QPR and became a sensation in the Championship. It was evident to us that he was destined for a transfer."
"When you excel in the Championship, a myriad of opportunities open up before you, all centered around making the right choice. Will you opt for a prestigious club? Will you decide on a club that prioritizes your development and guarantees regular playing time?
"I sensed that James possessed the qualities of such a player a few years ago."
I requested James to contact Ebere and give him advice, as I believed James could have a positive impact on him. James willingly made the call and was pleased to engage in that conversation. It was wonderful that he was able to assist Ebere in his journey, which was quite remarkable.
Both of them are now flourishing on the grand stage. Maddison is excelling with Tottenham, while Eze is making waves at Crystal Palace. They are the mavericks of the game, possessing flair and a knack for unpredictability. These are the types of players who can entice even neutral spectators to alter their plans for the afternoon.
Eze's captivating dribbling style effortlessly captivates viewers, including defenders. "You can't take your eyes off him," says Hall, who was also a winger during his playing career. "Even as a young player, he had this mesmerizing ability to deceive opponents with his body feints, it was truly magical to witness."
His distinctive style earned him a nickname at QPR's academy. "We affectionately called him the 'drunken master' due to his unique and seemingly relaxed approach." This style is currently causing havoc for opponents in the Premier League. By the end of August, he was one of just two players who had successfully completed more than ten dribbles.
Palace manager Roy Hodgson is known for his preference for structured teams, but he has given 25-year-old Eze the freedom to express himself on the field, encouraging him to be true to himself and confident in finding solutions. "He has great game awareness," Hall praises.
And what about Eze's seemingly lazy style? It may be misleading to judge solely based on appearances, as his dribbling skills can be deceiving. Perception and reality may differ. In fact, the numbers might surprise you. Eze ranks among the top 10 players in the Premier League for pressuring opponents and successfully causing turnovers.
That's why the numbers are commendable, according to Hall. They demonstrate that he is exerting the same amount of effort as others. However, because his actions appear to be mere jogging, he occasionally faces criticism for not working diligently. Nevertheless, he is truly diligent in his efforts.
Due to this aspect, Hall sees him as a positive role model for young players. However, Eze's approach can be risky if others misinterpret his relaxed demeanor and attempt to imitate him by not putting in the necessary hard work. In reality, he is indeed putting in the necessary effort.
Maybe some coaches missed it too. There have been rejections.
"He has shown such resilience."
Eze had already experienced stints at Arsenal, Fulham, and Millwall before finally settling at QPR. "They all played a role in his development because without that journey, it's uncertain whether he would have gained the resilience to persist when things weren't going his way."

According to Hall, the valuable lessons he received were not of his own doing, but rather from the remarkable individual he had the privilege to instruct. The most significant teachings revolved around humility, teaching him the importance of remaining grounded and modest. Moreover, he learned the virtue of patience when dealing with players, comprehending that their progress is an ongoing process. Undoubtedly, this talented individual stands out among the best players he has ever collaborated with.
The finest individuals, as well.
It is rare to find someone in football who has achieved such greatness yet managed to maintain such humility. He never seeks recognition for himself; instead, he always attributes his success to God. It is impossible not to be drawn to this quality. It is simply enchanting and not something you come across often.
"He is the most visually stunning individual that I believe I have encountered in the realm of football. His kinfolk exhibit exceptional equilibrium and possess an innate affability. Never once have I witnessed him succumb to a fit of anger. His determination is resolute not only in achieving success, but also in ensuring the elation of all those who revel in his triumph."

James Maddison is replaced by Eze during England's win over Malta in June 2023
Eze's England debut in June was an emotional moment for his former coach, given the circumstances. Gareth Southgate's team was already leading by three goals against Malta when Eze made his first international appearance. He contributed to England's 4-0 victory, replacing none other than James Maddison.
"It was such a moment," says Hall.
For both players, there are sure to be many more to come.
