Starting on July 20th, Diablo 4's Season of the Malignant will commence, offering players the opportunity to begin anew with fresh characters and embark on a wide range of seasonal activities. As they progress through the game's 90-tier battle pass, players will be able to delve into the captivating content of this first season, which is expected to last approximately three months. Once players have completed the campaign, they will gain access to the seasonal realm.
To gain further insight into the game's debut season, Game Rant sat down with Diablo 4's Associate Game Director Joseph Piepiora, Dungeon Designer Michelle Piña, and Quest Designer Madeleine James. During this discussion, they reflected on Diablo 3's seasonal content as a source of inspiration and discussed their efforts to enhance the system while retaining the elements that proved successful in its predecessor.
Diablo 4's Seasons Will Be Easier To Progress Than Diablo 3
The season journey in Diablo 4 closely resembles that of Diablo 3. It is divided into chapters, each containing a set of objectives that players must complete before progressing to the next chapter. However, one improvement that sets Diablo 4 apart from its predecessor is that players are not obligated to complete all objectives in order to advance. This allows players to avoid participating in specific aspects of the game, such as the Fields of Hatred PVP content, if they are not interested. Additionally, players now have the option to pursue extra objectives beyond what is necessary to advance to the next chapter. For instance, those who enjoy PVP can still engage in battles, gather shards, and use that progress towards completing their season journey.
In Diablo 4, we have placed a strong emphasis on meaningful upgrades that enhance the gameplay experience and provide players with exciting new content as they progress. This includes the introduction of new Legendary Aspects that players earn while advancing through the season journey. However, in addition to these new Aspects, we have also included several exclusive Legendary Aspects that cannot be obtained through the Codex of Power. These recipes become available to players as they complete the season journey, offering a wider range of choices when creating a new character and allowing for more options to enhance their build. Furthermore, the season journey in Diablo 4 goes beyond just rewarding class set pieces and portrait frames, and now offers players the opportunity to acquire powerful Legendary Aspects that were previously unavailable. This expansion provides players with greater freedom to experiment with different builds and progress at their own pace. Overall, Diablo 4's seasons offer a heightened level of freedom and customization for players seeking to advance and craft unique character builds.
Diablo 4's Seasons Are More Narrative-Driven
Unlike Diablo 3's seasons, Diablo 4 introduces a significant shift towards narrative development. In contrast to the limited storytelling in Diablo 3 seasons, Diablo 4's developers intend to use seasons as an opportunity to delve deeper into Sanctuary's lore. Each season in Diablo 4 will feature an extensive and self-contained narrative that is separate from the main campaign. This will help provide context to the specific mechanics of each season. Our discussions with the Diablo 3 seasons team have influenced our approach to seasons in Diablo 4. We aimed to place a stronger emphasis on narrative, using it as a means to explain the new mechanics. While we may not achieve the same level of storytelling as the main campaign, we still wanted to explore the vast array of stories within the world of Sanctuary. The focus does not solely revolve around Lilith and Inarius; we aim to expand on the story of Sanctuary by delving into its extensive cultures and world, using seasons as a medium for exploration.
For those intrigued by Diablo's intricate lore, this announcement brings exciting prospects as players can anticipate delving further into the intriguing characters and diverse cultures of Sanctuary in the foreseeable future. While the developers have specified that the seasonal stories will be distinct from the main campaign, it remains captivating to see the evolution of these narratives and the potential fate of Sanctuary after Lilith's reign.
Diablo 4 is currently accessible on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
