Highlights
Diablo 4's loot system needs significant improvements as it currently lacks impactful and meaningful drops, making it hard to find upgrades for players' gear.
The loot pool in Diablo 4 may not be extensive, yet the vast range of potential affixes that items can possess is exceptionally high, leading to gear pieces with unfavorable stats. With an abundance of craftable powers known as Aspects, as well as the prevalence of Legendaries and Uniques, players often struggle to come across truly valuable and exhilarating additions to their arsenal, thus diminishing the overall gratification of the loot system.
The popularity of Diablo 4 has waned since its initial release, largely due to the issues that arose with Season of the Malignant. From the notorious "all nerfs" patch to the unexciting seasonal loop and lackluster rewards, there are many areas for improvement that Blizzard must focus on to recapture the success of the game's launch period. The good news is that Blizzard is actively seeking feedback and paying attention to the concerns of the community, offering hope for the future as Season 2 approaches in October. Before the new season launches, Blizzard should prioritize evaluating Diablo 4's itemization and finding solutions to the numerous problems that plague loot in the game.
Loot lies at the heart of ARPGs, and achieving a proper balance in terms of its quality and significance is a complex task. The frequency of drops, the power of the items, and various other factors all play a role in striking that delicate equilibrium. To illustrate, Diablo 4's exceptionally rare Uniques are currently not in an optimal state, as they are exceedingly difficult to come by, making it nearly impossible for players to rely on them for essential builds. This issue is particularly evident among Druids who struggle to obtain the crucial items that define their playstyles. Additionally, loot lacks the satisfying impact it could have, necessitating several adjustments from Blizzard to rectify this matter.
Why Diablo 4 Needs to Revamp its Loot
One of the major issues with Diablo 4's loot system currently is the abundance of Uniques and well-rolled rares that players can find for Aspect-crafting. However, it is extremely difficult to consider new copies of the same items as an upgrade in the endgame. This is because although the loot pool is not extensive, the number of possible affixes that items can possess is incredibly high, often resulting in suboptimal gear.
Finding gear that surpasses the suboptimal state is not a simple task, primarily due to the numerous rolls that a single item can have. Statistically, it is highly likely that players will obtain at least one stat that they do not benefit from on a single item. While it is possible to reroll the unwanted stat, the process is costly and offers no guarantees. In fact, for Season 2 of Diablo 4, there are two potential outcomes for itemization – either reducing the number of affixes on each piece of gear or making the process of rerolling affixes more rewarding or less expensive.
The Aspects in Diablo 4 heavily contribute to the lackluster feeling of loot, as they are essentially customizable abilities that can be added to almost any item. This often means that players already have decent gear before they even start farming for more. With the high baseline power, it becomes even more unlikely to come across loot that feels like a significant upgrade. Additionally, Legendaries and Unique items are quite common, but there is a slim chance of them being truly impactful additions to a player's arsenal.
This abundance of options in terms of possible builds could be causing issues in the game. The developers intended to cover various playstyles with niche affixes on items, such as the more powerful buffs from Shrines in Diablo 4. However, these affixes are situational at best. To resolve this, Blizzard should focus on reducing the number of possible affixes and increasing the value of both Legendaries and Uniques. This should be a priority, especially considering that the game is currently facing similar issues as Diablo 3 did during its launch. While an expansion may help win back players, the core gameplay and loot mechanics should be balanced well in advance.
Diablo 4 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
