In Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 20, a formidable antagonist is introduced with one of the most extraordinary abilities in anime history, giving him nearly limitless power. Thanks to the exceptional skills of Kenpachi Zaraki, however, Gremmy is prevented from decimating the entire Soul Society singlehandedly.
In this episode, Kenpachi Zaraki confronts Gremmy Thoumeaux, a cunning Sternritter who was initially disguised and attacking Isane's triage station under a false identity. Revealing his true nature, Gremmy possesses the ability to manifest whatever he imagines into reality with his schrift ability, "V - The Visionary". Only through Zaraki's new Shikai is he able to secure victory against Gremmy. Had Gremmy possessed greater control over his power, he would have been invincible.
Gremmy's Imagination Ability is One of Bleach's Most Broken
It goes without saying that Gremmy possesses an incredibly potent ability that makes him a formidable opponent. As long as he envisions himself surviving and emerging victorious, defeating him becomes near impossible. However, while imagination holds immense power, it can also be difficult to control and can prove to be a double-edged sword. Kenpachi Zaraki quickly discerns that Gremmy's reactions to his own actions influence Gremmy's thoughts and subsequently shape his imaginative capabilities. Thus, Zaraki initiates an unrelenting barrage of powerful attacks that nearly frighten Gremmy into envisioning his own demise.
Nevertheless, Gremmy showcases the extent of his ultimate power when he summons a meteor from the heavens, claiming it will obliterate the entire Soul Society. This act bears resemblance to an attack demonstrated by Madara in Naruto. Zaraki employs his newly revealed Shikai release to split the meteor, leaving Gremmy astounded. The pivotal moment in the battle occurs when Gremmy tries to replicate Zaraki's displayed power, but his imaginary form proves incapable of handling such intensity. It is then revealed that Gremmy is nothing more than a brain suspended in a jar. Naturally, like many supremely empowered abilities in anime, it is challenging to fully ascertain the accuracy of Gremmy's schrift. It is possible that he could have imagined Zaraki vanishing, but instead, he fell victim to the limitations of his own imagination and suffered defeat.
The clash between Gremmy and Zaraki stands out as an intriguing confrontation, where contrasting abilities result in surprising outcomes. In this match-up, Gremmy's seemingly superior power was unexpectedly defeated, highlighting the unfortunate mismatch. However, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War continues to unveil a multitude of Quincy Sternritter powers, while Gremmy's ability will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most overpowering in history.
