Unveiling Aston Villa's Rising Star: Ezri Konsa's Astonishing Goal and Transformation Journey under Unai Emery

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa reveals his remarkable goal against Brentford, his training with Unai Emery to improve his physique, and his aspirations for the upcoming Premier League season in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports

Ezri Konsa shares, "I doubt I will ever surpass that moment in my professional journey. It was a remarkable instance where I noticed an opportunity to make a run and thought, 'Why not?' Without much realization, I found myself positioned in front of the goal. Thankfully, it resulted in a successful shot."

The fact that a player considers a goal scored during a pre-season tournament as the greatest accomplishment of their career signifies its significance. Konsa initiated the impressive run from the left side of his own territory, admitting, "I am unsure of what I was doing there." He only halted when it was time to partake in the celebration.

"I honestly had no clue what to do," he chuckles. "Plus, considering I used to play for Brentford, I had a bit of reverence as well. Perhaps if I manage to score in the Premier League this year, I'll celebrate a little more."

Konsa is sharing his thoughts at Aston Villa's training facility, just back from the summer tour in the United States - although "rested" may not be an accurate term. He confesses to feeling a bit of jet lag. They also had to endure rigorous training during their inaugural pre-season with Unai Emery. "Just pure hard work," he adds.

Sometimes, we had the afternoon off. During those times, we would visit the White House and do some sightseeing. It was a pleasant experience. Now that we're back home, the enthusiasm surrounding Emery's Villa is overpowering, overshadowing any tiredness. This team is on the rise, and we're in it together.

The feeling is incredible. Everyone looks forward to training every day. We have become a close-knit group, just like a small family, as the boss wanted. Since his arrival, we have truly become that family, and I can feel it on the field. We have a stronger trust in each other, and it's showing in the results we're achieving.

Villa were positioned three spots clear of the Premier League relegation zone upon Emery's arrival in October. However, by the season's end, they had moved three positions down and were now outside the Champions League spots. This allowed them to make a return to European competition after a gap of more than ten years.

Under Emery's guidance, the team experienced a remarkable transformation, acquiring an identity that was previously absent. Players who were once doubted managed to prove their doubters wrong. Konsa, who had experienced a decline in performance under Emery's predecessor Steven Gerrard, has reached new heights since then. He is now performing at his best, and even exceeding expectations.

Working with him has been a game-changer for me. His outstanding CV speaks volumes about his experience, the exceptional players he has collaborated with, and the prestigious clubs he has been a part of. The prospect of further professional development with him excites me, and I eagerly anticipate the opportunity of a full season under his guidance.

Emery's attention to detail is evident in every aspect of his coaching. From extended video analysis to intensive training sessions, he leaves nothing to chance. This meticulous approach has resulted in players adapting to a higher level of scrutiny, even necessitating changes in their defensive body positioning.

"He has his own unique methods that deviate from what we are accustomed to. For instance, the way we have been taught to adjust our position when the ball flies over our heads is completely different. It's a learning curve for all of us, but we are embracing the challenge and finding joy in the process."

Konsa, now 25 years old, had already accumulated 100 appearances in the Premier League prior to working with Emery. It may seem peculiar that he had to reacquaint himself with the principles of defending under his new boss, but he demonstrated the humility to do so, and he was not alone.

"Tyrone Mings possesses greater experience than I do, yet he, too, continues to learn. Diego Carlos boasts significant experience, having played in various countries, and he, too, remains in the process of learning. We are all still acquiring knowledge and relish the opportunity to engage in daily training, where we acquire new skills."

It can be challenging. Emery implemented a high defensive line at Villa during the previous season, which remains a priority. However, there were a few instances during pre-season where we didn't execute it correctly. We are currently in the process of refining and mastering this tactic."

Additionally, there will be modifications made. The squad will see the inclusion of Spain's Pau Torres as another center-back, indicating Emery's plan to utilize him alongside Konsa and Tyrone Mings on occasion. One of the full-backs will remain, but will be encouraged to advance forward. In the case of Matty Cash being retained, Torres is likely to assume the left-back position. Alternatively, if Alex Moreno remains, Konsa will take up the right-back position. It is worth noting that certain center-backs struggle when positioned wider, but Torres' speed and agility make him one of the premier one-on-one defenders in the league.

"He has instilled the belief in us that when we strengthen our defense, it becomes a formidable unit. Even when I find myself defending solo on the right side, I have complete confidence and ease in handling such situations. It's not a hindrance but rather an essential responsibility that defenders must embrace. It's a test that I eagerly anticipate taking on."

If Torres adds pressure to secure his position, Moussa Diaby, the winger acquired from Bayer Leverkusen, adds intensity to our training sessions. "He possesses remarkable speed, an electrifying style of play, and is definitely someone to watch out for in the Premier League," affirms Konsa.

In a bid to challenge on multiple fronts, Emery has bolstered the team during the summer transfer window. The primary goal is to secure European qualification via the Premier League, while also aiming to finally bring an end to Villa's 27-year-long drought for a significant title in any of the three cup competitions.

Europe poses a fresh challenge for Konsa, who eagerly anticipates the opportunity. Since childhood, he has watched European events on television and has long desired to be a part of them. Thus, being involved now is a dream come true for him.

As for Villa's objective, their aim is to build upon the achievements of the previous season and strive for improvement. They seek consistency and aspire to secure a spot in European football as well.

And for Konsa himself? "I just want to keep learning and improving."

Under Emery, that seems inevitable.
