Lord and Miller discussed the impact of casting Kaluuya as Spider-Punk in the development of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. "Initially, his involvement in the project was uncertain as we were still deciding which elements to incorporate in this installment and what would carry over to the next film," Lord revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. However, upon meeting Daniel Kaluuya, it became clear that he was perfect for the role of Hobie Brown, regardless of any obstacles. Miller added that Kaluuya's portrayal of the character simplified matters. "Some questioned if we really needed Spider-Punk given the number of characters involved. However, once we got to know Daniel, we recognized the necessity of rewriting the role to further enhance the story," Miller explained.

Brown's role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse goes beyond being visually impressive as Spider-Punk. He advises Miles Morales to be cautious of the Spider Society, as they may ask him to do things that make him uncomfortable. Brown encourages Miles to be independent in his role as Spider-Man. Additionally, Brown assists Miles in escaping an electric forcefield prison, allowing him to rescue his father. As part of the Spider-team, Spider-Punk is determined to save Miles from being trapped in the wrong dimension.

Kaluuya's portrayal of Spider-Punk is an exceptional casting choice, as he brings a cool and individualistic vibe to the character. In current big-budget animated movies, it is uncommon to have such unique casting. While Kaluuya may have been chosen for his star power, his performance as Spider-Punk is so well-executed that he truly makes the character his own. It is hard to imagine anyone else playing the part better than him, highlighting the brilliance of his casting decision.

Kaluuya's casting in this franchise continues the trend of making perfect choices. Jake Johnson excelled in his portrayal of a middle-aged, depressed Spider-Man, while Oscar Isaac delivered a powerful performance as the deeply damaged yet steadfastly responsible Spider-Man 2099. Hailee Steinfeld impressed as Spider-Gwen in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but truly shined with more development in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Despite being well-known actors, their selection for these voice roles is clearly inspired.
