Caution! This post includes SPOILERS for season 2 of I Am Groot.
Season 2 of I Am Groot has been released, showcasing a delightful array of Easter eggs and references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe across its five fresh episodes. Centered around the lovable Groot (portrayed by Vin Diesel) during his younger days, season 1 of I Am Groot took place after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and the same holds true for this new season. As a result, fans of Baby Groot now have even more charming misadventures to enjoy, accompanied by some fantastic Easter eggs along the journey.
8 Candies From GOTG Vol 2
: Hidden Easter Eggs and MCU References in I Am Groot Season 2The initial episode of Season 2 of I Am Groot is titled "Are You My Groot?" Within this installment, Baby Groot embarks on an exploration of the planet Terma, a location previously mentioned by Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. During his journey, he promptly encounters a baby bird indigenous to Terma and swiftly forms a close bond with it. As only Baby Groot is capable of, he endeavors to care for and nurture the bird, offering it some of his vibrant, multicolored candies.
7 The Fake Leg from GOTG
The MCU has featured these candies before, with their most memorable appearance being in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In this scene, Baby Groot casually munches on them while the Guardians are crash-landing on the planet Berhert. Although they differ from Skittles, director James Gunn has confirmed that Baby Groot shares Star-Lord's affinity for space candy, evident by the candy wrappers scattered throughout the Guardians' ship in various movies.
The second episode of Season 2 of "I Am Groot" is titled "Groot Noses Around". While on a search for new batteries for his video game controller, Groot unintentionally acquires a prosthetic nose, which grants him a whole new sense of smell. However, Groot's reactions to various smells are mixed, as he sometimes enjoys them and other times finds them unpleasant. Interestingly, the nose was discovered in a bin containing various prosthetics, including the fake leg that Rocket humorously claimed he needed during the prison escape in the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" film. In reality, Rocket had no genuine use for the leg; he simply found it amusing, much like his affinity for prosthetics, including Bucky Barnes' cybernetic arm.
6 The Fake Eye from GOTG Vol 2
The bin of prosthetics aboard The Benatar also contains a fake eye instead of the prototype fin that Yondu requested, which Groot had brought to Yondu and Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This adventure marked one of Baby Groot's earliest solo escapades, making it a delightful callback now that he has his own series. Moreover, the presence of these prosthetics on the Guardians' ship reflects Rocket's peculiar sense of humor. While it would have been enjoyable to witness Rocket's Christmas arm, which was pilfered from Bucky Barnes, it is important to note that the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special has not yet occurred in the MCU timeline.
5 Skrulls And More Marvel Characters in Groot's Video Game
In I am Groot season 2, episode 2, the videogame that Groot returns to appears to be a battle between a Skrull and a potential Kree warrior. In the backdrop, Howard the Duck can be spotted as one of the 8-bit spectators enthusiastically showing support. Howard the Duck, voiced by Seth Green, initially made his appearance in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film and has since made frequent cameo appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
4 Rocket's Voice Cameo
3 Howard The Duck & Arishem Ice Creams
: Groot's Snow DayIn the third episode of Season 2 of I Am Groot, titled "Groot's Snow Day", Baby Groot brings an eventful and perilous day in the snow to a close by savoring a cup of hot chocolate. However, to his dismay, the cup's contents turn out to be scorching hot, prompting a frustrated reaction from Baby Groot, who hurls the mug in anger. Rocket's voice is heard in the background, indicating that he is the unfortunate target of the projectile. Notably, the credits confirm that Bradley Cooper reprised his role for a voice cameo. It is also interesting to mention that Groot's snowy escapade takes place on Falligar, the very same planet where Thor and Korg encounter the deceased deity with the same name in the film Thor: Love and Thunder.
In I Am Groot season 2, the fourth episode "Groot's Sweet Treat" brings back another reference to Howard the Duck. A passing ship resembling an ice cream truck not only carries ice cream that resembles Howard, but it also has ice cream shaped like Arishem, the Celestial from Eternals. The episode showcases Baby Groot's relentless determination in his desperate search for money to get his hands on the ice cream before the ship departs. This comical adventure also results in quite a bit of destruction.
2 Groot's Nova Corps Action Figure
In "Groot's Sweet Treat," a comical element emerges as the adventure commences with Groot amusingly playing with an action figure and a can. The action figure itself represents a Nova Corps officer, who made their debut in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film as peacekeepers. However, the humorous twist arises when the actual Nova Corps is called to investigate after Baby Groot impulsively leaps into The Benatar's pod, attempting to catch up with the ice cream ship.
Although the episode only portrays the aftermath, it is evident that Groot unintentionally crashes the pod into the ship, causing its destruction. While he does acquire his sought-after Arishem ice cream bar, the episode concludes with Groot facing the consequences from the authorities. Consequently, the clever and amusing inclusion of the Nova Corps effectively frames the short adventure.
1 The Watcher
The final episode of season 2 of I Am Groot is titled "Groot and the Great Prophecy". Narrated by Jeffery Wright as The Watcher, it's comical to witness the cosmic observer become increasingly frustrated with Baby Groot and his mischievous behavior. Despite a prophecy proclaiming that saving a significant seed would preserve the universe, Groot's constant distractions result in the seed's unfortunate destruction, much to the Watcher's disappointment.
Nevertheless, the Watcher comes to understand that the seed symbolizes Baby Groot himself and his immense potential to rescue the universe. Fortuitously, the fate of the universe is not sealed by the conclusion of I Am Groot season 2. Additionally, the episode hints at Baby Groot's ability to perceive the Watcher, despite the Watcher being a fifth-dimensional being, humorously confirming Groot's heightened cosmic awareness despite his amusingly short attention span.
