Quantum Leap is set to make its highly anticipated return to NBC on Monday, October 4th, following an edge-of-your-seat finale. This reboot of the beloved 1989 series revolves around the mysterious disappearance of Samuel Beckett, picking up years later. In Season 1, viewers will join Ben Song on his exhilarating journey, as he jumps from one person's body to another, all while desperately seeking a way to reunite with his fiancée, Addison. Although the finale initially suggests that Ben has discovered a means of returning home, audiences are left hanging as the credits roll just moments before his potential arrival in the present day. With the release of the Quantum Leap Season 2 trailer showcasing numerous thrilling leaps, it becomes clear that Ben's time-traveling adventures are far from over.
Created by Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt, the series is based on the original concept by Donald P. Bellisario. Under the leadership of showrunner Martin Gero, the ensemble cast is led by Raymond Lee, who has made a name for himself through notable projects such as Top Gun: Maverick, Kevin Can F*** Himself, and Here and Now. Rounding out the cast are Eliza Caitlin Bassett, Ernie Hudson, Mason Alexander Park, and Nanrisa Lee.
Raymond Lee Talks Quantum Leap Season 2
Raymond Lee exclusively discusses Ben's unsuccessful attempts to return home, the upcoming substantial developments, and the growing emotional disconnect between Ben and Addison in the second season. (Note: The subsequent conversation took place prior to the commencement of the SAG-AFTRA strike and it is imperative to acknowledge the significant contribution of both the writers and actors affiliated with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, as this show would not have been possible without their dedication and hard work.)Screen Rant: Quantum Leap is coming back for season 2! How has the energy been on set?
Raymond Lee: This season is incredibly exciting and starts off with a major impact. We have an impressive lineup of guests and a vast setting - Afghanistan in the 70s. I can't reveal too much, but the scale of this season is immense. The enthusiasm is palpable.
As for Ben's adventures, when we last saw him, he was hopefully leaping home. However, considering the nature of the show, it wouldn't be unexpected if he doesn't end up there. Can you share any hints about Ben's escapades in this season?
Raymond Lee: Immediately following the conclusion of the first season, you catch glimpses of promos teasing the upcoming season [laughs]. It can be inferred that Ben does not successfully return home. As previously mentioned, it is quite evident that these leaps are more substantial, both in terms of emotional intensity and the involvement of the characters. We are gradually veering away from the intricate mechanics and mythology, instead focusing heavily on character development and the unfolding narrative. Emotionally, we aim to strike deep chords that will resonate with you profoundly. Additionally, the action will be ceaseless throughout a significant portion of the season. I can assure you that the excitement surrounding the content we have filmed thus far is exceptionally high.
Are you anticipating any developments in Ben's relationship with Addison? In the previous season, he struggled with memory loss, but now he remembers who she is.
Raymond Lee: Absolutely. Things become quite intriguing. When it comes to relationships, once you truly understand what you have in front of you, it brings about the uncovering of more aspects. If one person is aware of something the other is not, it creates a divide. Despite being physically closer, Ben and Addison have never felt more distant. It is interesting because now we need to navigate an emotional journey to reconnect, now that all the memories have returned. The physical memories are restored, and now we must find a way to regain the emotional connection.
Are there any particular episodes or moments in this season that you are particularly excited about?
Raymond Lee: While every episode is amazing and holds its own significance, I must say that shooting episode eight in a captivating location was truly enjoyable. This show remains deeply rooted in history and historical fiction, and we are striving to delve further into what made the original show so great. It was the intriguing encounters with history. We aim to explore how to navigate these significant moments in time that have had a tremendous impact on us, and in doing so, we will craft stories that embrace these historical contexts.
