Sony's grip on Marvel's most beloved superhero has faced numerous hurdles in recent times. As part of their endeavor to keep the character, the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU) has adopted a seemingly intriguing approach of creating standalone movies surrounding some of the web-slinger's iconic villains. Kraven the Hunter, a lesser-known figure, will face off against the enigmatic assassin, the Foreigner, in the upcoming movie.
Venom was an obvious choice for the SSU's debut, given the fanfare surrounding the character. Kraven, on the other hand, is a more obscure selection, and Sony may need to dig deeper than the Hunter to find other viable options. Inevitably, minor characters in a movie about a minor superhero will be considered D-listers, but perhaps the film can help the Foreigner garner a following.
Who is the Foreigner?
Foreigner is a skilled and highly sought-after assassin, known for his expertise in martial arts, marksmanship, and tactical brilliance. Despite having no superpowers, he is on par with Captain America in terms of physical abilities and has even demonstrated impossible feats of strength and speed through brief hypnosis of his foes. He is a master of disguise and possesses hundreds of identities, making him difficult to track down. In addition to his impressive abilities, Foreigner also has a long list of surprising accomplishments, including owning and operating the 1400 Club, a league of assassins that remains hidden from government agencies, and training Sabertooth to become the killer he is today. Though he has occasionally found himself on the wrong side of the law, Foreigner is a force to be reckoned with and is often the first name on the list when someone needs a contract carried out.
When did the Foreigner First Appear In Marvel Comics?
Foreigner made his debut in The Spectacular Spider-Man #116 in July 1986, with his initial appearance bearing a striking resemblance to actor Patrick McGoohan. He was introduced to Spider-Man's complicated relationship with Black Cat when he bet fellow mercenary Chance that he could not defeat Spider-Man, and won the bet when Chance was defeated. The storyline continued with Sabertooth attempting to kill Black Cat, but he too was defeated by Spider-Man. It was then that Foreigner attacked Black Cat and the two began a relationship under the guise of working together to take down Spider-Man, although Foreigner's true intention was to recruit him for the 1400 Club. However, Spider-Man refused and the Foreigner was forced to abandon his identity. Their first fight ended in a loss for Foreigner due to a betrayal from Black Cat.
For Foreigner's big-screen debut, a new actor will have to take on the role since Patrick McGoohan passed away in 2009. The selected actor for the role is the accomplished character actor, Christopher Abbott. Abbott has been in the entertainment industry for over a decade and has had several noteworthy roles, including his standout performance in Brandon Cronenberg's 2020 film, Possessor. He gained recognition for his breakthrough role in HBO's Girls in 2012, followed by a portrayal of astronaut David Scott in Damien Chazelle's award-winning biopic, First Man, in 2018. Abbott also played the iconic lead role of John Yossarian in Hulu's adaptation of the novel Catch-22 in 2019. Overall, Abbott's talent and extensive experience in the industry make him a solid choice for the role of a sophisticated master assassin.
While Foreigner may not be as well-known as some of the other comic book villains, he remains a unique and intriguing character. With his ability to navigate unexpected situations and achieve seemingly impossible tasks, he adds a level of unpredictability to any storyline. And while a film centered around a big-game hunter and master assassin may not have the same level of recognition as other superhero adaptations, the concept still holds potential for an exciting and action-packed movie.
