Unlocking the Sinister Secrets: How Skyrim's Villain Paves the Way for The Elder Scrolls 6

The Elder Scrolls 6 can elevate its gameplay by taking inspiration from Thoron, a compelling Skyrim villain whose quest line highlights the potential for improvement and offers valuable lessons for the upcoming game

The original version of Skyrim offered players a captivating experience with hours of content. However, modders took it to a whole new level, enhancing the game and creating an entirely new experience. Bethesda acknowledged the significant improvements made by these modders and decided to show their support for the game's tenth anniversary. In 2021, they released the Skyrim Anniversary Edition, which included the Creation Club. This allowed modders to officially contribute their creations to the game.

The Creation Club brought forth an abundance of new content, crafted by talented modders. This included fresh storylines, weapons, armor, locations, gameplay elements, and enemies. Drawing inspiration from the rich lore of Skyrim and previous Elder Scrolls games, these mods added an exciting dimension to the game. One standout mod was Saints and Seducers, which introduced a new quest line, formidable enemies, and a wealth of powerful items for the Last Dragonborn to acquire.

What The Elder Scrolls 6 Can Learn From Thoron

Saints and Seducers takes inspiration from The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion: The Shivering Isles for its content, including its items and enemies. The Shivering Isles, a realm ruled by Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness, serves as the source for the various trinkets and servants that have somehow appeared in Tamriel. In Saints and Seducers, the Golden Saints and Dark Seducers, loyal followers of Sheogorath, play a central role. Though they are fiercely devoted to their prince, they are also rivals in their service, yet united in their cause.

The quest begins with a Khajiit trader seeking assistance in stopping bandits who have been robbing his caravan near Whiterun. These bandits, as it turns out, are none other than the Golden Saints and Dark Seducers themselves. They have been stealing ordinary items and sending them to an unidentified master. Clues gathered from their respective camps lead the Last Dragonborn to the Solitude sewers, where a surprising abundance of plants and creatures from the Shivering Isles await.

At the end of the sewer, the player comes across Thoron, a powerful mage who is the root cause of all the trouble. This encounter is far from easy. Thoron can summon a Golden Saint and a Dark Seducer as his allies, replacing them when they are defeated. He also possesses strong self-healing abilities, a formidable health bar, and is equipped with a magical shield and an enchanted helm that significantly boosts magicka regeneration. Defeating Thoron requires careful preparation and strategic thinking, making it a challenging battle. One of the rewards for victory is the Sword of Jyggalag, which is a nod to The Shivering Isles.

Thoron stands out from the other enemies in Skyrim because of the combination of fan-favorite lore from a previous game and the need for a more strategic approach rather than simply relying on aggressive damage-dealing. This element adds depth to the gameplay and is something that The Elder Scrolls 6 could incorporate more of. While Skyrim may not be a strategy-focused game, introducing more complex fights that go beyond brute force would enhance the overall experience, especially when each enemy can easily be defeated with the same strategy.

Saints and Seducers does have its flaws, much like other content from the Creation Club. However, the abundance of new armor and weapons for crafting, as well as the lore that ties into Sheogorath's presence in the base game of Skyrim, elevate this quest line above many others. Although it would have been ideal to gain direct insight from Thoron, piecing together his motivations through the notes exchanged between his minions and his personal diaries adds a puzzle-like element to the quest, staying true to the essence of the Prince of Madness.

Development is underway for The Elder Scrolls 6.
