After more than thirteen years since the release of the first installment, Alan Wake 2 is set to finally be released. Fans of the franchise have been eagerly anticipating the continuation of the story, particularly after the cliffhanger ending of the first game. Given the significant time gap between the previous installment and Alan Wake 2, fans may benefit from a recap of some of the game's vital elements.
The primary storyline of Alan Wake revolves around a writer whose wife mysteriously disappears. As the narrative unfolds, it becomes apparent that both the writer and his wife have become entangled in the grasp of a malevolent entity called The Dark Presence, which slowly consumes the town of Bright Falls. Alan Wake relies on darkness itself as a gameplay mechanic, where players utilize flashlights, floodlights, and flares to incapacitate enemies under the control of The Dark Presence. The true nature of the game's primary antagonist is quite intricate.
What Is The Dark Presence in Alan Wake?
The Dark Presence is an enigmatic being that resides in the mysterious realm known as The Dark Place. Although the creature's origins remain obscure, it is closely associated with Cauldron Lake. Its purpose is to target artists and exploit their creative works to enhance its own power, seeking to escape The Dark Place and wreak havoc on the world beyond.
Within the game, the creature predominantly assumes the form of an elderly woman, yet it possesses the ability to infiltrate and manipulate nearly any object or being. Alan Wake encounters talkative individuals and various inanimate objects that have fallen under the control of The Dark Presence, serving as his primary adversaries. To vanquish these adversaries, one must illuminate them to weaken their defenses and then eliminate them with gunfire.
How The Dark Presence Leaked Into Other Games
The power emanating from The Dark Place grants artists the extraordinary ability to manipulate reality, thereby amplifying the strength of The Dark Presence. In the case of the renowned writer, this ability materialized through the discovery of manuscript pages scattered throughout Alan Wake, which often foretold events before they actually transpired within the game. One of the game's pivotal revelations was that the protagonist had to compose a comprehensive story culminating in the entity's defeat, effectively manifesting it as reality due to the nature of the alternate realm. Additionally, the game unraveled the truth that the influential heavy metal band, The Old Gods of Asgard, and esteemed poet, Thomas Zane, fell prey to the manipulative forces of The Dark Presence, yet each managed to triumph over it, although not without incurring a price.
The Dark Presence's impact on the game's world was not limited to a single occurrence. The conclusion of the game hinted that The Dark Presence remained, albeit potentially weakened for now. While Alan Wake 2's gameplay trailer did not feature any direct references to this malevolent entity, there is a strong possibility that the creature will persistently strive to regain its freedom.
The infection caused by The Dark Entity was also observed in Control's Alan Wake DLC. In this expansion, it is revealed that Doctor Hartman, one of Alan Wake's adversaries, descended into madness and threw himself into either the Dark Place or the Dark Presence. He was then consumed by it and transformed into the creature that players had to confront in Control. Tactics involved using lights to stun the creature and expose its vulnerability, enabling players to attack.
The marketing for Alan Wake 2 has been vague, leaving uncertainties about how The Dark Place or The Dark Presence will impact the storyline and gameplay. Nevertheless, it is reasonable to assume that the entity will continue to pose problems in the world, as its presence was not fully concluded in the first game.
Alan Wake 2 releases October 27, 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
