Young Sheldon season 7 is expected to focus on the entire Cooper family, but the season 6 finale already laid the groundwork for explaining Missy's story in The Big Bang Theory spinoff. Missy's character in Young Sheldon has been quite complex. In The Big Bang Theory, she was not given much attention, with Sheldon being more preoccupied with her dating life than her own well-being. However, in Young Sheldon, Missy and Sheldon share a much closer bond as twins and have a significant presence in each other's lives.
Similar to how Young Sheldon provided deeper insights into the character of Mary from The Big Bang Theory, the prequel's portrayal of Missy's life story evokes a sense of sadness in retrospect. Throughout Young Sheldon season 6, Missy's rebellious teenage phase dominates her storyline, making it disheartening to realize that despite maintaining a civil relationship with her mother in The Big Bang Theory, Missy was never truly close to Mary. However, an explanation for this may be offered in Young Sheldon season 7. In season 6, episode 22 of Young Sheldon titled "A Tornado, a 10-Hour Flight, and a Darn Fine Ring," Missy finds herself teamed up with her father George Sr., hinting at a potentially ongoing connection between them.
Young Sheldon’s Season 6 Finale Brings George Sr. & Missy Closer
Missy's rebellion reached its peak during a terrifying encounter with a tornado that left her and her father trapped and facing imminent death. While Sheldon ventured to Germany in the season 6 finale of Young Sheldon, the Cooper family's small hometown fell victim to the destructive tornado that caused fear and havoc for George Sr. and Missy. Despite surviving the ordeal, Missy made a promise to her father to put an end to her teenage rebellion, although her true intentions remained uncertain. Unfortunately, Mary's absence during this life-altering event suggests that Missy will likely have a closer relationship with her father than her mother in the future.
However, this may not bode well for Missy, considering the established fact in The Big Bang Theory canon that George Sr. dies shortly after the events of this season. It remains unclear when this will occur in the Young Sheldon spinoff, as the show has previously taken liberties with The Big Bang Theory's timeline. Nevertheless, when the inevitable happens, it will undoubtedly be a devastating loss for Missy. It makes logical sense for Missy to develop a stronger bond with her father, especially since her older brother is preoccupied with raising his own child and Mary has moved to Germany with Sheldon. Nevertheless, this will only amplify the profound impact of George Sr.'s eventual passing on Missy.
Missy Getting Closer To George Sr. Would Make His Death Harder
The potential closer relationship between Missy and George Sr. and Mary and Sheldon following their trip to Germany may explain why Mary was not as close to Missy in adulthood as she was to Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. It is a tragic backstory for their imperfect relationship, but one that acknowledges George Sr.'s significance in both of their lives. As rebellious Missy from Young Sheldon never had a good relationship with Mary, her improved bond with George Sr. during the summer makes sense. Unfortunately, this could result in Missy and Mary associating each other with George Sr.'s death by the time The Big Bang Theory occurs.
