One of the challenges faced by Young Sheldon is that he doesn't quite fit in with his small-town family. The concept of Sheldon being out of place in a small Texas town has been a source of humor in the early seasons of Young Sheldon. However, as the spinoff began to delve deeper into the lives of the other members of the Cooper family, it became increasingly difficult to seamlessly integrate Sheldon into the show. To address this issue, the season 6 finale of Young Sheldon cleverly sent Sheldon to Germany for the summer, allowing the show to focus on its more serious aspects. As a result, the episode featured a tense fight between Missy and George Sr, the engagement of Mandy and Georgie, and the revelation and destruction of Meemaw's secret gambling room due to a tornado. These storylines would have lost their dramatic impact if Sheldon had been present to provide comedic relief.

Young Sheldon Season 6 Proved Sheldon & The Coopers Work Better Apart

Moving Sheldon to Germany for the summer provided an opportunity for the spinoff to explore his character outside of the family unit. With his flourishing academic career, it could be beneficial for Sheldon to be absent from the family drama that is expected in Young Sheldon season 7. This change of scenery may improve the dynamic within his family. Although Sheldon has already had experiences outside of his usual environment, such as accompanying Mary to Germany and visiting CalTech with George Sr, Young Sheldon should continue to push the boundaries. One example of this is seen in Young Sheldon season 5, episode 12, where Sheldon attends Comic Con for the first time and finds himself in unfamiliar yet comedic situations. In contrast, the workplace stories in Young Sheldon season 6 felt monotonous and did not explore his current college plots effectively.

How Young Sheldon Season 7 Can Separate Sheldon From His Family

In order to give Sheldon more independence from his family, taking him on field trips away from his hometown would be beneficial. This would result in Sheldon having more solo adventures, such as his trip to Comic-Con, which would enhance the comedic flow of the show. In season 6 of Young Sheldon, Sheldon occasionally interacted with Meemaw, Missy, and the rest of his family, but his involvement in their stories was minimal. If Sheldon were to explore the outside world on his own, he could embark on self-contained adventures that are more fulfilling than the drawn-out and ultimately meaningless grant database storyline of season 6.

However, viewers should not be concerned that this would eliminate Sheldon's connection with his relatives. Sheldon could still bring along a chaperone on his trips. In season 3, episode 16 of Young Sheldon, titled "Pasadena," George Sr took Sheldon to CalTech for the first time to attend a talk by Stephen Hawking, resulting in many heartwarming moments between father and son. Following his trip to Germany, Sheldon could visit other universities. Since The Big Bang Theory establishes that Sheldon does not end up attending these universities, season 7 of Young Sheldon could showcase enjoyable standalone stories set on these campuses. Keeping in mind that Sheldon's ultimate departure from Texas has yet to occur, his familial ties would remain intact.

Young Sheldon Season 7 Can Still Keep Sheldon’s Family Connection Alive

Sheldon's frequent visits to out-of-state schools present an opportunity for Young Sheldon to connect him with different members of the Cooper family. Currently, Sheldon's focus on his university work limits his interactions with Meemaw or Georgie. However, Missy and Mary's storylines often intertwine with Sheldon's, and Missy's rebellious nature creates tension between her and her brother. In Young Sheldon season 7, it would be beneficial to pair Sheldon with Georgie, Meemaw, or Missy on a weekly basis. This approach would allow the show's main character to reconnect with the new stars during these school visits, while also exploring potential universities that may not be suitable for Sheldon or his family.

Georgie's romantic life in Young Sheldon might pose challenges for him to accompany Sheldon on campus visits. On the other hand, Missy has shown a strong desire to be part of college parties, making it plausible for George Sr. and Mary to send both Sheldon and Missy to visit a prospective college together. This trip could serve as a test for Missy's behavior, leading to various humorous situations. Additionally, this storyline would provide an opportunity to delve into Missy and Sheldon's often overlooked friendship. In a broader sense, these plots could also showcase Sheldon aligning with his family against snobbish faculty members, thereby improving his relationship with the Coopers.

Separating Sheldon & The Coopers Reinvigorates Young Sheldon Season 7

In the current storyline, Sheldon's character in The Big Bang Theory barely has any connection to the Cooper family. While the other Coopers are involved in interesting and engaging stories, the show's main character feels disconnected. However, in Young Sheldon season 7, there is an opportunity to return to the show's original premise. By having Sheldon accompanied by various family members on a road trip across America to different educational institutions, the show can bring back the connection between Sheldon and the Coopers. This setup would not only reconnect the characters but also align with the show's roots, potentially fixing one of the major issues in Young Sheldon season 7.
