Hogwarts Legacy offers a vast amount of content for players to discover. In addition to its detailed main storyline, the game also boasts a significant amount of side-content for avid fans to conquer.
This side-content encompasses the impressive achievement list of Hogwarts Legacy, providing a challenging endeavor for dedicated players. Similar to other games, these achievements consist of hidden elements that players are meant to decipher and unlock on their own, without any assistance. While it is commendable that Hogwarts Legacy incorporates these types of experiences for players, the range and implementation of the game's secret achievements may leave something to be desired.
The Secret Achievements of Hogwarts Legacy
In total, Hogwarts Legacy has a total of 45 base achievements, out of which only four are secret achievements. Surprisingly, these secret achievements are the most time-consuming as they necessitate separate playthroughs to unlock.
These four secret achievements, namely The Gryffindor in the Graveyard, The Toast of the Town, The Wise Owl, and The Auror's Apprentice, are each associated with a different Hogwarts house playthrough. To obtain these achievements, players must discover the Map Chamber while playing as each respective house. Although these playthroughs add replay value to Hogwarts Legacy and encourage players to experience different house perspectives, the usage of achievements becomes repetitive and unexciting.
How Hogwarts Legacy Could Have Improved Its Secret Achievements
The secret achievements in Hogwarts Legacy have a major issue: they all relate to the same mainline quest, with the only difference being the player's house. Furthermore, this quest occurs quite early in the main story, making the secret achievements feel repetitive. This missed opportunity could have been used to create house-specific achievements that cater to each house's unique traits and ventures, providing more depth and significance to the player's house choice.
Instead of this, Hogwarts Legacy's secret achievements should have been tied to house-specific accomplishments that players can attain. This would add more value to the decision of choosing a house and encourage players to roleplay in alignment with the values and characteristics of their chosen house. For example, unlocking the Gryffindor secret achievement could involve approaching quests with fairness and justice, while the Slytherin achievement could reward players for their cunning and deceitfulness.
The problem with Hogwarts Legacy's secret achievements highlights the overall criticism of the lack of meaningful house choices in the game. While having secret achievements that reward specific behaviors would help address this, it would be even more beneficial to incorporate more diverse storylines based on house choices and behavior. Although Hogwarts Legacy does have multiple endings, they can be obtained without much effort or strategic planning from the player.
A greater range of house-specific quests in Hogwarts Legacy would have resulted in a much stronger array of secret achievements, which is currently a major weakness of the game. The existing secret achievements feel empty and repetitive, so adding depth and uniqueness to each achievement would greatly enhance the game's replayability and role-playing aspect.
Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a Switch release scheduled for November 14th, 2023.
