"Invasion" is the sixth season of Overwatch 2, featuring three exciting PvE missions set in the bustling home cities of beloved characters. Players will have the thrilling opportunity to select from a carefully curated group of heroes for each mission. In the Ironclad mission, Torbjorn takes center stage, highlighting his exceptional engineering skills through the addition of distinctive turrets that enhance the gameplay by introducing a tower defense aspect instead of the typical shooter style. This unique feature distinguishes the Ironclad mission from other PvE missions, and incorporating hero-specific gimmicks in future missions could enhance replayability and deepen the overall experience.
Overwatch 2 has recently launched its sixth in-game season, known as "Invasion" by Blizzard. This season introduces highly anticipated PvE missions, offering players three different experiences to enjoy. These missions take place in various locations around the world, focusing on the home cities of well-known characters from the franchise.
In each PvE mission, players can choose from a small roster of heroes to play with. Certain heroes play a more prominent role in specific missions, like Torbjorn in the Gothenburg-set mission called Ironclad. Ironclad showcases a unique take on Torbjorn's turret-building mechanic, which should definitely be incorporated for other heroes in future missions.
Overwatch 2 PvE: Gothenburg's Torbjorn Turret Twist
Torbjorn, a damage hero in Overwatch 2, is highly regarded for his remarkable engineering skills. He played a crucial role in developing effective defenses for Earth during the Omnic Crisis, particularly in his hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden. Torbjorn's strategic genius enabled the creation of a powerful arsenal of turrets, greatly assisting the city in fending off waves of Omnic robot armies.
This fascinating aspect of Torbjorn's expertise is further explored in Overwatch 2's PvE experience through the Ironclad mission. Serving as the central figure in this mission, Torbjorn's engineering prowess is showcased by his ability to deploy turrets not found in the standard PvP gameplay. The inclusion of freeze and knockback turrets during Ironclad adds a layer of depth to the gameplay, resembling a tower defense experience rather than the fast-paced shooter gameplay usually associated with Overwatch 2.
Future Hero Gimmicks that Overwatch 2 Could Employ
These diverse turrets enhance the replayability of the Ironclad mission by providing a wider range of options for gameplay. They go beyond the typical enemy variations found in other missions of the franchise, contributing to a more engaging experience. It is unfortunate that the other PvE missions in Overwatch 2 did not incorporate a similar mechanic for their featured heroes. However, this is a potential aspect that can be rectified in future missions that will be introduced to the game.
The diverse backgrounds and unique skillsets of every hero in Overwatch 2 distinguish them from one another in the game. This wide range of abilities provides an ideal collection to draw inspiration from when designing hero gimmicks for future PvE missions in the title.
Gimmicks could have easily appeared in the other two PvE missions currently available in Overwatch 2, such as Lucio's mission in Sao Paulo. Since Lucio is a DJ and has a love for music, the Sao Paulo mission could have included deployable DJ decks that can heal or enhance the damage of nearby heroes.
Even heroes like Reinhardt could have their own mission gimmicks, like a mission set in Germany where other heroes can temporarily wear Reinhardt's crusader armor. The possibilities for these types of gimmicks are endless, thanks to Overwatch's rich lore and diverse cast of heroes. It's no surprise that Ironclad, the only mission featuring such a gimmick, is highly popular among the current PvE missions in the game. While it's important to avoid overusing these gimmicks, there is clear potential for future PvE missions to include hero-specific gimmicks of their own.
Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
