Blizzard had to significantly increase the amount of content in Diablo 4 to accommodate its more open-world gameplay style, surpassing anything seen in previous entries. While Diablo 3 had small-scale dungeons and optional objectives, Diablo 4 offers a far greater scale of opportunities for players to pursue. These include dungeons and strongholds, which provide unique rewards such as Aspects and additional Waypoints, as well as other rewards for venturing beyond the beaten path, which is where the Renown system comes into play.
Renown Explained (& the Rewards)
By engaging in optional activities across the five major regions of Sanctuary, players can earn Renown, which is a system that rewards exploration and diversification from the campaign. Each region offers five Renown tiers, which can be unlocked by earning enough Renown. At the outset, only the first three tiers are available, with the remaining two unlocked by completing the first Capstone Dungeon and reaching World Tier 3. The rewards for each Renown tier include Bonus XP, varying amounts of Gold, Skill Points, Potion Capacity, Max Obols, and Paragon Points.
Rewards in the Renown system are directly proportional to the completion of optional objectives and increase in Renown. To maximize the benefits of the system, players should strive to attain World Tier 3 at the earliest. It's worth noting that certain rewards are specific to a realm, while others are specific to a character. For instance, the bonus experience and gold obtained from each tier are attributed to the character being played. On the other hand, the extra skill points and expanded potion capacity are exclusive to the realm and become accessible to all characters once unlocked, irrespective of their individual Renown levels.
The amount of Renown players can earn varies depending on the type of activity they engage in. Here is a breakdown of how much Renown each activity provides: Unlocking Waypoints offers 20 Renown, Discovering Areas grants 5 Renown, Defeating Strongholds rewards 100 Renown, Clearing Side Dungeons yields 30 Renown, Completing Side Quests awards 20 Renown, and Finding Altars of Lilith provides 10 Renown.
To maximize Renown rewards, players can prioritize completing all side quests and dungeons in addition to Strongholds, as the latter are limited in number. Diablo 4 is currently accessible on various platforms including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
