World of Warcraft has collaborated with actress Mila Kunis and BlueCheck Ukraine to launch two companion pets, ensuring that 100% of the proceeds are donated to charitable causes. The two chosen pets, Sunny the Golden Retriever and Flurky the Baby Murloc, were deliberately selected for their color resemblance to the Ukrainian national flag.
World of Warcraft has been embroiled in controversy in Ukraine due to its attempt to raise subscription prices. However, the game has now teamed up with actress and activist Mila Kunis and the BlueCheck Ukraine umbrella charity to support humanitarian relief efforts in the country. As part of this collaboration, two companion pets, Sunny the Golden Retriever and Flurky the Baby Murloc, will be introduced in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight and Wrath of the Lich King Classic. All proceeds from the purchase of these pets will be donated to BlueCheck Ukraine for a limited period.
World of Warcraft has a history of supporting charities through the Battle.net Shop. However, there has been controversy surrounding their recent involvement with Ukraine. Blizzard initially announced plans to raise the monthly subscription price in Ukraine and Turkey due to global inflation and increasing costs. While the price increase proceeded in Turkey, the strong backlash from players on social media and forums led to Blizzard reversing the decision for Ukraine. Nevertheless, Blizzard's engagement with Ukraine did not end there.
In an effort to provide humanitarian relief to Ukrainians affected by the ongoing conflict, World of Warcraft players in Ukraine can now purchase the $20 Pet Pack, with the entire purchase amount going directly to BlueCheck Ukraine. BlueCheck Ukraine is a collaborative initiative co-founded by actor and activist Liev Schreiber, in partnership with multiple vetted causes such as Project Victory and the Lviv International Symphony Orchestra. The organization aims to support various forms of humanitarian aid for those affected by the conflict. Actress Mila Kunis, who was born in Ukraine and now resides in the United States, joined forces with BlueCheck Ukraine and World of Warcraft to raise donations and contribute to the relief efforts.
Both Sunny and Flurky were selected for this charity initiative because their vibrant colors, gold and blue, perfectly match the Ukrainian national flag. Furthermore, Flurky's inclusion is particularly significant as it holds a sunflower, which is considered Ukraine's national flower. By purchasing the Pet Pack for Ukraine, World of Warcraft players will automatically have Sunny added to their pet collection in Dragonflight. However, players of Wrath of the Lich King Classic will need to undertake a short quest in order to obtain Flurky. This quest can be initiated by speaking to any of the innkeepers in the capital cities or by contacting Landro Longshot in Booty Bay.
While the Battle.net Shop has sparked contentious discussions among players, World of Warcraft's previous charitable endeavors, such as supporting Doctors Without Borders, have proven to be successful fundraisers. Only time will reveal the number of bundles that will be sold to aid ongoing relief efforts in Ukraine.
World of Warcraft is available now for PC.
