Highlights
Gen 9 games, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, were groundbreaking despite their rocky launch, introducing innovation to the franchise.
The base game and upcoming DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet focus heavily on Grass-type Pokemon, featuring a significant number of them.
Moreover, the inclusion of the Indigo Disk in the DLC has sparked speculation about the possible introduction of a new type in Generation 10, leaving many intrigued about the mysteries surrounding these new Pokemon and their unique type combinations. However, it appears that The Teal Mask serves to solidify the increased emphasis on Grass-types.
Despite the initial rocky launch of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet due to performance issues and glitches, Gen 9 games were groundbreaking in multiple ways, surpassing past games and setting expectations for future ones. With the introduction of the first-ever fully open-world Pokemon games and the breaking of longstanding traditions, Gen 10 has a lot of pressure to live up to. However, Gen 9 also had its flaws and quirks, including the interesting decision by Game Freak to focus on one specific type in both the base game and the upcoming The Teal Mask DLC.
In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the Indigo Disk will introduce a new nineteenth type to the chart. Although it currently only seems to be connected to Terastallization, it could potentially lead to the introduction of an entirely new type in Gen 10. Additionally, both DLC expansions will feature a mix of new and returning Pokemon for trainers to catch. However, many of the exclusive new Pokemon remain shrouded in mystery, including their official type combinations. Despite this, one type was heavily featured in the base game of Gen 9, and The Teal Mask DLC is further expanding its roster with even more Pokemon of that type.
How Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Favor Grass-Type Pokemon
With a staggering total of 104 fresh creatures in the Paldean Pokedex, Gen 9 stood out as one of the most prolific installments in the series. The number increased to 106 with the introduction of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Walking Wake and Iron Leaves through Tera Raid battles. However, the type distribution among Paldean Pokemon was not entirely balanced, with certain types having only a limited representation while others had an abundance.
Of all the types, Grass took the lead with the highest number of new Pokemon in the base game, boasting a total of 15. In comparison, the second most represented type, Dark, had 13 critters. Additionally, the upcoming DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, The Teal Mask, will introduce two new Grass-type Pokemon called Applin and Poltchageist. There is also a possibility that this number could double with the evolution of Poltchageist and the appearance of Ogerpon. While Ogerpon's typing in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet remains uncertain, there are indications that it may possess a Grass-type Tera form, provided it is not already a Grass-type to begin with.
Without factoring in any potential new Grass Pokemon from The Indigo Disk DLC for the Gen 9 games, it can be determined that Grass will have the highest number of representatives in Paldea by a significant margin. This is particularly true since leaks suggest that there will be no new Dark-type creatures. Currently, the Grass-type Pokemon featured in Scarlet and Violet (including those announced for the DLC) are as follows:
- Sprigatito
Floragato
Meowscarada
Smoliv
Dolliv
Arboliva
Bramblin
Brambleghast
Toedscool
Toedscruel
Capsakid
Scovillain
Brute Bonnet
Wo-Chien
Iron Leaves
Dipplin
Poltchageist
The number of Grass-type pocket monsters is expected to increase even more with the release of both DLC expansions, potentially reaching a total of 19 or more. This highlights Game Freak's recent focus on Grass-type Pokémon. The introduction of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Poltchageist along with Bramblin and Brambleghast enhances the variety of Grass/Ghost creatures, while Meowscarada, Brute Boonet, and Wo-Chien all have Dark as their secondary type. This decision to dedicate numerous Pokémon to a single type in Gen 9 is intriguing and prompts speculation about the themes and new creatures in future generations. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are currently available for the Nintendo Switch.
