The Dragon Ball Super universe is filled with numerous immensely powerful characters, and the recent introduction of two new androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2, adds to that roster. Interestingly, the arrival of these incredibly strong androids, who are said to be on par with the likes of Goku and Vegeta, brings attention back to their predecessors, 17 and 18. Surprisingly, there is evidence to suggest that Androids 17 and 18 have the capacity to become even stronger.
Created by the renowned scientist Dr. Gero of the Red Ribbon Army, Androids 17 and 18 were initially designed with the sole purpose of tormenting and ultimately eliminating Goku. Unlike some of Dr. Gero's other creations, it is hinted that the androids were formed by combining two kidnapped humans with advanced technological enhancements. They are not entirely mechanical constructs like robots, nor are they bioengineered entities like Cell. Following their antagonistic role in the Androids Saga, Androids 17 and 18 eventually fought alongside Goku and his comrades on numerous occasions, particularly in Dragon Ball Super. Despite this, it is important to acknowledge that neither of them has fully tapped into their potential.
The Debut Of The Androids Gamma Makes 17 And 18 Look Even More Impressive
In Dragon Ball Z, the androids are artificial beings without the ability to produce ki. However, Dr. Gero equipped them with an "infinite energy reactor" that allows them to generate limitless energy, enabling them to fight tirelessly at full power. Initially, their power level was surpassed by the Saiyans, Cell, and Majin Bu. It was also believed that as artificial beings, the androids couldn't become stronger through training. However, this notion was proven false by Toriyama himself, as the androids can indeed train and become more powerful. An example of this is Android 17 in Dragon Ball Super, who has significantly increased his strength. In a manga encounter with Goku, Goku had to transform into Super Saiyan 3 to keep up, but still faced difficulties. On the other hand, Android 18 may be comparatively weaker due to focusing on family instead of extensive training.
In the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie, a new generation of androids created by Dr. Gero's nephew, Dr. Hedo, is introduced. These androids possess a higher base power than Android 17 and 18, being described as strong as Goku and Vegeta Blue. Additionally, they have the ability to learn and grow stronger during battles, making them formidable villains in Dragon Ball Super. However, they are ultimately inferior to Android 17 and 18. Despite having a substantial energy reserve (Gamma 1 retains 83% of his energy after fighting Potential Unleashed Gohan), they lack the infinite energy reactor possessed by their predecessors. Furthermore, their appearance and reliance on a special gun rather than ki blasts suggest they are more artificial than human-like. Therefore, their potential for growth through training is likely lesser than that of Androids 17 and 18.
17 And 18 Have The Potential To Be The Strongest Heroes In Dragon Ball Super
Based on these factors, Androids 17 and 18 possess superior technology compared to the Gammas. Their limitless energy ensures they can always fight at full power without getting tired, unlike most characters in Dragon Ball who eventually exhaust their energy. Additionally, their exceptional learning capability allows them to continuously enhance themselves. They can practice a technique for as long as they desire until they master it, as demonstrated by 17's impressive increase in power. Taking all of this into consideration, it can be inferred that 17 and 18 have the potential to surpass not only the Androids Gamma, who are known as some of the strongest characters, but also the other heroes in Dragon Ball Super, including the Saiyans.
