Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, Episode #23
In Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, several Soul Reaper Captains have been defeated by their Quincy Sternritter adversaries. Surprisingly, some of these fallen captains seem to have ended up in a better situation than before.
Two of the former Visored, Kensei and Rose, who had returned to being captains in the Soul Society after the conclusion of the Arrancar arc, were shown engaging in a fight against Mask de Masculine in Thousand-Year Blood War. Unfortunately, both captains were ultimately defeated by the wrestler-themed Quincy. A similar fate befell Toshiro Hitsugaya, who suffered a particularly brutal defeat at the hands of Bazz-B and was left to die. Strangely enough, these Soul Reaper Captains did not have the chance to meet their demise, as Giselle, one of the Sternritter, intervened and transformed them into her zombies.
Bleach's Soul Reaper Captains Fight Better As Zombies
The zombified Hitsugaya immediately emerged as a formidable threat, nearly succeeding in killing Mayuri Kurotsuchi if not for a special drug that trapped him in a time loop. Despite his undead state, Hitsugaya effortlessly wielded his Zanpakuto and unleashed inventive attacks, like conjuring ice spikes on his knees before launching an assault. It was revealed that Kensei, Rose, and Rangiku were also transformed into zombies, but Mayuri managed to seize control of them from Giselle and claimed their power for himself.
When Mayuri ordered the zombie Kensei and Rose to battle Sternritter PePe, they exhibited ruthless aggression, with Kensei resorting to his Bankai to strike the Quincy relentlessly. This alteration in the anime differed from the original manga, where Kensei defeated PePe using only his fists. Despite Byakuya's disapproval of their condition, there was no denying the undeniable fact that they performed significantly better in combat as zombies than they did when they were alive. With their ability to utilize their Zanpakuto, and even Bankai, in their current state, Mayuri's suggestion of maintaining their zombified forms until the Soul Society's defense concluded may indeed be superior.
Kensei, Rose, Rangiku, and Hitsugaya were explicitly transformed into zombies before their deaths by Giselle's power. This transformation enhances their abilities as zombies. Consequently, there is a possibility for these Soul Reapers to be restored to their original lives. However, the method for achieving this restoration remains uncertain. Mayuri would need to dedicate time and research to unravel this mystery. As a result, these four individuals may have no choice but to remain as zombies temporarily. Interestingly, the transformation into zombies has unexpectedly improved the combat skills of these Bleach warriors. Given the current state of the Soul Society, any power-up is seen as a valuable asset.
