The game has experienced substantial updates since its initial launch, incorporating fresh maps, game modes, characters, and more.
With the inclusion of PvE story missions in the Invasion update, Overwatch 2 advances towards the envisioned experience presented at BlizzCon 2019, despite certain features being discontinued.
Blizzard has officially announced that Overwatch 2's Invasion update on August 10 will mark the transition from its early access phase to "full live game operations." Despite initially being released as an early access game in 2022, Overwatch 2 boasted a significant amount of content. It included all the features of the first Overwatch game, along with additional maps, the new Push game mode, and three fresh characters: Kiriko, Junker Queen, and Sojourn. As subsequent seasons unfolded, Blizzard continued to expand the game with thrilling updates, introducing new heroes such as Ramattra and Lifeweaver, limited-time game modes, and an array of exciting new maps.
Game Rant queried Blizzard regarding the Season 6 start date on August 10 and whether it also signifies the end of Overwatch 2's early access phase. Jared Neuss, Overwatch 2's executive producer at Blizzard, responded by stating, "I believe Invasion marks the point at which we transition out of early access. It's not so much about meeting a specific content threshold, but rather ensuring that we are operating the game in the way we intend. Is this the right structure? Is this the desired cadence?" Neuss further elaborated, stating, "For me, Overwatch 2 Invasion is that defining moment. We have identified various features that were lacking in the game and made improvements, such as providing better ways to acknowledge player commitment and time investment, as well as gaining insights from competitive play and integrating future adjustments accordingly. These were all valuable lessons learned during the initial period, allowing us to forge ahead and establish a consistent rhythm. Thus, in my view, this signifies our exit from the early access phase and marks the transition to full live game operations."
With the release of Overwatch 2's Invasion update, the game will no longer be in its early access phase. The update will bring numerous additions, including the introduction of a new Support hero called Illari, a new game mode called Flashpoint with two accompanying maps, a time-limited co-op event called Underworld, and the inclusion of the first three PvE missions.
It is significant that Overwatch 2 is shedding its early access label alongside the introduction of these highly anticipated PvE story missions. The PvE aspect was initially a major selling point for the sequel, and although some of the more ambitious features showcased at BlizzCon 2019 had to be canceled, the addition of this content demonstrates that Overwatch 2 is gradually aligning with its original vision.
Overwatch 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
