The combat mechanics of Diablo 4 have undergone some changes, with the inclusion of Lucky Hit Chance being one of them. Despite its seemingly straightforward nature, this mechanic can be easily misinterpreted. Although its impact may not be immediately noticeable, players who understand how it works recognize its value and never consider it a useless stat.
While many builds can function without focusing on Lucky Hits, this attribute plays a significant role in the creation of builds in Diablo 4 due to its ubiquitous presence in gear, skills, and effects. To understand this mechanic better, here's what you need to know.
What does Lucky Hit do in Diablo 4?
The frequency of triggering on-hit effects is determined by the Lucky Hit Chance, also known as Proc Coefficient. This chance is directly linked to skills, rather than solely relying on the player character's stats, unlike Critical Hit Chance. Offensive abilities typically have their own base Lucky Hit Chance, with slower attacks having higher values compared to faster ones.
However, Lucky Hits alone do not have any impact on character classes. The player must possess a Lucky Hit Effect from an item or skill node for their proc chances to have significance. These effects also have their own base chances, meaning that triggering a Lucky Hit does not necessarily guarantee that the effect will apply.
Players will need to roll the dice twice in order to determine the effectiveness of their Lucky Hit, due to the two-layered RNG system. Fortunately, it is possible for players to have multiple Lucky Hit Effects active on their character simultaneously. Each effect will be rolled independently, which means that there is the potential for multiple effects to be triggered at the same time or for none to be triggered at all.
When it comes to incorporating Bonus Lucky Hit Chance, things can get a bit confusing. The game indicates that this stat boosts the likelihood of triggering effects, which suggests that the Base Lucky Hit Chance of skills remains unaltered, causing all multipliers to apply solely to the Lucky Hit Effect. To illustrate, if a player has a 10% chance of inflicting Vulnerable on a successful Lucky Hit with a Base Lucky Hit Chance of 50%, the actual chance of inflicting Vulnerable will only be 5%. However, if players manage to acquire an additional 50% Bonus Lucky Hit Chance, their actual proc rate will increase to 7.5%.
For builds centered on Lucky Hits to be viable, players need to attain effective proc coefficients. However, in typical builds, it is more advantageous to have a variety of effects available rather than seeking out gear that only enhances the chance of procs. Keep in mind that Diablo 4 will be available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S starting on June 6.
