Google's new Magnifier app is now available on the Pixel 5 and later, with a short waiting time. Previously exclusive to the Pixel 8 smartphone, this app enhances the readability of small print or distant signage. Although some may argue that using the camera is sufficient, I recommend downloading Magnifier from the Play Store and giving it a try. It showcases some remarkable features that are definitely worth your while.
Upon opening the Magnifier app, you're welcomed by a camera viewfinder and a user-friendly interface. It includes large buttons to adjust the zoom ratio, a flashlight button (accompanied by a slider to control the intensity), and straightforward brightness and contrast controls. Additionally, there's a prominent shutter button that acts more like a freeze-frame button. Freezing an image prompts Magnifier to provide convenient Google Lens controls, allowing you to highlight and copy text, request Google to read a menu or sign on your behalf, or obtain solutions to math problems. If desired, frozen images can be saved to your camera roll manually.
The Magnifier app automatically enhances and adjusts images to improve the legibility of text. Additionally, it offers incremental zoom controls up to 30x zoom, unlike the linear zoom control found in the camera app. Its user-friendly interface makes it easy to use, making it a preferable option to the camera app when experiencing difficulty reading or seeing something.
To further enhance the utility of the Magnifier app, Google suggests setting it as your Quick Tap app. This allows you to open the Magnifier app by simply tapping the back of your Pixel phone. To do this, begin by opening Settings and selecting "System." Then, navigate to "Gestures" and choose "Quick Tap." Enable the "Use Quick Tap Setting" option and scroll down to locate the "Settings" button next to the "Open App" function. From there, select the Magnifier app. Now, whenever you double-tap the back of your phone, the Magnifier app will automatically open.
Magnifier is only accessible on Pixel 5 and subsequent models. Find and install Magnifier from the Google Play Store. A comparable functionality was introduced on the iPhone several years back.
