Highlights
Bloodborne, launched in 2015, stands as an unparalleled and socially significant game that shaped the PS4 era for numerous gamers, and the PS5 has not yet acquired a definitive exclusive title of the same caliber.
FromSoftware's exceptional art design, gripping storyline, and cohesive thematic elements truly set this game apart, making it one of their most visually arresting and unforgettable creations.
Bloodborne's exhilarating combat mechanics, characterized by intense and aggressive gameplay, coupled with its diverse array of weapons and adversaries, contribute to its reputation as an exceptional game. The PlayStation 5 eagerly awaits a comparable exclusive release in the near future.
Often praised as one of FromSoftware's most unique titles, Bloodborne has remained culturally relevant since its release in 2015. Combining Victorian and cosmic horror elements with the Soulslike formula, the game's hunt through the cursed world of Yharnam has left a lasting impact on players of the PS4 generation. Bloodborne may have paved the way for games like Sekiro and Elden Ring, but it stands alone as a cherished memory since the release of The Old Hunters. Now, with the latest console generation in full swing, the void left by Bloodborne has yet to be filled.
As is typical for new console releases, it takes time to establish a solid software library. While any new hardware can compete in the market, it's the games exclusive to a specific console that truly define its identity. Bloodborne, released less than two years after the launch of the PS4, set a standard of quality that many of its fans believe has yet to be surpassed. Although the PS5 has seen strong releases, none of its exclusives can rival the darkness and depth of FromSoftware's masterpiece.
Bloodborne Was the Complete Package for the PS4
Bloodborne's thematic coherence was evident from the beginning, as conveyed by a cinematic trailer that showcased its rich world and dark tone. While it still featured the narrative presentation that FromSoft is renowned for, this game departed from the fantasy elements of the Souls titles. With its superb art design as the foundation, the gothic horror-themed setting of Yharnam is still regarded as one of the studio's most visually impressive creations. Even after eight years, players continue to speculate on the game's intricate lore, as Bloodborne's disturbing story remains captivating to many.
While the story and visuals of the game are difficult to surpass, it is the gameplay of Bloodborne that truly shines for most players. Renowned as the most intense and aggressive combat system ever created by FromSoft, Bloodborne did away with the defensive shield usage seen in Dark Souls and instead implemented the "Rally" system, which rewarded continuous attacking. With a solid selection of transforming weapons and a wide array of enemies and iconic bosses throughout the game's various areas, it is no wonder that Bloodborne has left such a lasting impression as a memorable experience.
The PS5’s Bloodborne Needs to Come Soon
The release of Bloodborne shortly after the launch of the PS4 solidified its status as one of the greatest console exclusives. However, with the PS5 being released in November 2020, it has been almost three years without a comparable game for the next generation. Despite fan requests, Bloodborne has yet to be ported to PC, indicating that it was designed specifically for PlayStation hardware. Unlike timed exclusives such as Final Fantasy 16, Bloodborne remains exclusive to PlayStation.
As Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass grows and they acquire major companies, it becomes more evident that a new game with system-selling potential could greatly benefit Sony. While Bloodborne paved the way for the modern action RPG genre, it was a unique game that came about under specific circumstances for FromSoft. Now is the perfect time for the right studio to collaborate with Sony once again, especially with upcoming multiplatform titles like Lies of P filling the void left by Bloodborne. The PS5 needs this support sooner rather than later.
Bloodborne is available now for PS4.
